Genetic Analysis of Plant Height and Number of Branches in Brinjal (solanum Mewngena L.)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The genetics or plant height and number or branches per plant was studied In brinjal using a 5 x 5 diallel cross. The mean squares due to both general and specific combining ability for these traits were highly significant Indicating the Importance or both additive and non-additive gene effects. For plant height In most or the cases the cross mil x tall showed positive SCA effect and for number of brunches per plant the cross Involving the parents having profuse branching showed positive SCA effect. The maximum heterobeltiosis for plant height was 26.40% and 48.45% for number of branches per plant. The genetic components or variation analysis suggested that the proportion or recessive alleles was more than that or dominant alleles for plant height. For number or branches per plant an excess or dominant alleles were present In the parents than the recessive alleles. The plant height was observed to be controlled by two pairs or genes or groups of genes but for number or branches per plant one pair or gene was Involved In controlling the character. The heritability In narrow sense was 69.57 and 38.98% for plant height and number of branches per plant, respectively. The graphical analysis Indicated the wide genetic diversity among the parents.

Objectives:

The present study has, therefore, been taken to investigate the genetics of plant height and branches per plant in brinjal.

Methodology:

Five genotypes, namely, lslampuri (PI), Uttara (P2), Shingnath Long (P3), Khalkhatia Long (P4) and Acc.No.ll-1-324 (P5) were crossed in all possible combinations including reciprocals. Twenty F1 and five parental varieties of brinjal were grown in a randomized complete block design with three replications at the Central Research Station of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute during October, 1987 to March, 1988. The plot size was 6x1 m with 60 em plant to plant spacing. Thirty five days old seedlings were transplanted in the plot on 5 November, 1987. Standard cultural practices were followed for raising the crop. Data on plant height and number of branches per plant were recorded from five randomly selected plants from each entry of each replication.

It was found that two pairs of genes were involved in controlling the characters plant height while one pair of gene was involved in controlling the character number of branches per plant. The heritability in narrow sense were 69.57 and 38.98% for plant height and number of branches per plant, respectively.
