Adoption and Relative Profitability of Groundnut (arachis Hypogaea L.) Cultivation in Char Areas of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study examined the extent of adoption and profitability of BARI groundnut cultivation. Eighty randomly selected farmers from Noakhali and Kishoregonj were interviewed for collecting primary data in March to April, 2009. The study revealed that 20% farmers adopted BARI variety. The level of technology adoption was not encouraging at farm level. The training and influence of Sub Assistant Agricultural Officer played an important role for the adoption of BARI groundnut. Net return from groundout cultivation was higher for BARI variety (18321/ha) compared to local variety (Tk. 3981/ha). Inputs like labour, urea, TSP and MP were significantly related with groundout production. Farmers had adequate scope to increase return by efficient utilization of inputs for groundnut production. They mentioned lack of quality seed; high price of seed and fertilizer; lack of capital; and scientific knowledge about modern cultivation as problems of ground nut production, We may overcome these problems by increasing various dissemination activities.

Objectives:

1. To measure the extent of adoption of BARI released groundnut variety at farm level;

2. To estimate the relative profitability o groundnut cultivation at farm level;

3. To estimate resource use efficiency in groundnut production;

4. To identify the farmers’ attitudes towards groundnut cultivation at farm level;

5. To make some policy guidelines for the development of groundnut production in char areas of Bangladesh.

Methodology:

The study was conducted in two districts namely Noakhali and Kishoregonj of Bangladesh based on production and aea coverage. In each district one upazila and from each upazila one or two village(s) was selected to collect primary data and information from the sample farmers. The study area was chosen in consultation with Agricultural Extension Officer and local Scientists involved in the oilseed Research Center (ORC) of BARI. In this study Dhaka-1 variety of groundnut was considered as a local variety due to lower yield compared to HYV varieties, although this variety was released by BARI in 1976. Thus a total of 80 sample farmers taking 40 farmers from each district were randomly selected for interview. Data were collected during the period from March to April 2009. Both the tabular and statistical methods were used for the study. Collected data were edited, summarized, tabulated ad analyzed to fulfill the objectives of the study. Tabular method of analysis using statistical tools was mostly used in presenting the results of the study. The BARI groundnut cultivating farmers were classified into four categories for determining the adoption level of technologies in terms of agronomic practices, time of operation and input use. The categories were developed based on the mean index of the farmer with respect to each technology. A higher index indicates a higher level of adoption, while a lower index indicates a lower level of adoption of a technology. Adoption level was categorized for mean index>100 as over use; (70-100) as high, (50-69) as medium, and <50 as low.

Achievement/Findings:

The study assesses the extent of adoption and the profitability of HYV groundnut cultivation at farm level. The average yield of HYV BARI groundnut is higher than that of local variety, but much lower than its potential yields. HYV BARI groundnut cultivation at farm level is found to be profitable. The farmers who cultivate HYV BARI groundnut receive 64% higher net profit over local variety. Resource use efficiency indicates that more profit can be obtained by increasing investment in crop management and application of fertilizer. Although HYV BARI groundnut is profitable but sample farmers have experienced different socio-economic constraints to groundnut cultivation.
