Toxicity Effect of Different Plant Extracts on Granary Weevil( Sitophilus Granarius L.) and Pluse Beetle (callosobruchus Chinensis L.)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Leaf and seed extract of bonkalmi; eucalyptus and nishinda were evaluated for their on granary weevil and pulse beetle, Acetone ethanol, methanol and water were used as solvent for extraction. The results showed that all the extract of test plants had toxic effect on both the insects. Bonkalmi leaf and seed also showed that water extract was equally effective in comparison to other extract for the both the insects. Effectiveness of all the plant extract increased proportionally with the increase of dose and decreased proportionally with the increase of dose and decreased proportionally with the increase of time. The seed was more effective than the leaf extract.

Objectives:

To identify plant extract with insecticidal properties as potential management tools, being one of the components of integrated pest management.

Methodology:

Experiment on the insecticidal activity of some plant extract against granary weevil and pulse beetle, was carried out in the laboratory of the Department of Entomology, BAU, Mymensingh during the period from January to October, 2003. BonkaImi, Ipomoea maxima Dort e Sweet was collected from Potuakhali while Eucalyptus, Eucalypus alba, Reniw ex Blume and Nishinda, Vitex nehundo linn were collected from BAU campus. The granary weevil, Sitophilus L and the pulse beetle, Cal/osobruchus chinensis were collected from the local market Mymensingh as well as from the government silos and maintained in the Laboratory of the Dept. of Entomology, BAU at 27-30⁰c temperature and 70-75% relative humidity. The extraction was done according to the method originally described by Talukder and Howse with a few modifications. Leaves and seeds of bonkalmi, eucalyptus and nishinda were washed in water after collection and then air-dried in shade. The air-dried seeds and leavers were then oven dried at 60⁰c. insect bioassay was done in the laboratory under ambient conditions. Mortality rate of both insects was assayed to estimate toxicity. The leaf and seed extract of bonkalmi, eucalyptus and nishinda were diluted with distilled water to make 25, 50, 75 and 100 mg/ml solution. The extract was sprayed with an atomizer on the seed grain in petridishes. Five pairs of adult’s insects were released in the petridishes containing food material. Three replications were maintained for each treatment. Mortality data was recorded at 24, 48, 72 hours after treatment. The experiment was designed in CRD. Analysis of variance was done to test treatment difference after arcsine transformation of the data. Treatment values were compared by DMRT.
