An experiment was conducted to find out the efficiency of Urea super granule (USG) application in comparison to prilled urea on the yield and yield attributes of cauliflower (cv. Pusa Saoni). Five treatments viz., recommended dose for high yield goal, N as prilled urea (N97 kg/ha), N as USG (N97 kg/ha), 10 and 20% less N as USG (N88 & N79 kg/ha) and farmers' dose (N as prilled urea, N03 kg/ha) were used in the experiment. The highest curd yield (61.98 t/ha) was obtained from recommended dose of USG which was 25% higher than prilled urea (46.74 t/ha). There was no significant difference in curd yield between 10 and 20% less USG but significantly higher than prilled urea. The highest gross return, gross margin and BCR was recorded from recommended USG even 10 to 20% less USG showed higher benefit cost ratio (4.12-3.95) than prilled urea (3.37). It indicates that USG as a source of nitrogen is more efficient than prilled urea in terms of yield and economic return.

To evaluate the efficiency of USG in comparison to prilled urea and also to determine the optimum and economic dose of USG on the yield and yield attributes of cauliflower.

The experiment was carried out in the medium highland of AEZ-8 at Farming Systems Research and Development site, Palima, Tangail of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute during 2001-2003. Before initiation of the experiment, soil samples were collected from a depth of 0-20 cm for each replication and analyzed by ASI methods. The chemical properties of this soil are presented. Soil is slightly acidic in reaction with medium contents of organic matter, very low content of total nitrogen and phosphorus, low in potassium, sulphur and boron and high in zinc. The rainfall during November, December, January and February were 0, 11, 3 and 177 mm in 2000-2001; 0, 0, 13 and 146 mm in 2001-2002 and similar in 2002-2003. The mean maximum temperature during November, December, January and February were 29.5, 25.5, 25.4 and 28.4 °C in 2000-2001; 30.1, 25.8, 21.0 and 28.3°C in 2001-2002 and almost same in 2002-2003. The experiment was carried out in a randomized compete block design (RCBD) having 6 dispersed replications. Five treatments were as T1 = N97P50K80S10Md0CD5t (Recommended dose for HYG, N as Prilled urea), T2= N97P50K80S10Md0CD5t (Recommended dose for HYG, N as USG), T3= N88P50K80Md0CD5t (N 10%< Recommended dose as USG), T4= N97P50K80S10Md0CD5t (N 20%< Recommended dose as USG) and T5 = N103P22K37S0Md0CD10t (Farmers' dose, N as Prilled urea). Farmers dose was surveyed by the average dose of 30 farmers practiced in that area. The unit plot size was 8m x 5m. The variety was Pusa Saoni. Seedlings were transplanted at a spacing of 60cm x 60cm for plant-plant and line-line respectively. Transplantation was done on 12, 15 and 22 October in 2000, 2001 and 2002 with 30-days-old seedlings. Fertilizer for each treatment calculated on the basis of soil test values. Except prilled urea and USG, all other fertilizers and 50% MP were applied on the basis of soil test values as per recommendation of FRG, BARC, 1997 during the final land preparation. For each year, USG was applied at 15 days after transplanting (DAT) in ring method as 9-10 cm apart from the seedling base and 7-8 cm depth in soil.

Based on three years results of experimentation, it could be concluded that  USG(N97) as a source of N is more efficient than prilled urea in terms of yield and economic result. The result also showed that 10 to 20% less than recommended doses of USG (N88 & N79) is more profitable in comparison to prilled urea in cauliflower production in the Young Jamuna and Brahmaputra Floodplain soils of Tangail, Bangladesh
