Integrated Management of Malformation in Mango (mangifera Indica L.)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted to develop an integrated management practice for controlling malformation with emphasis on non-chemical means and achieving higher yield of mango cv. Amrapali. Five treatments viz. T₁, = NAA (200 ppm)+ N₂₀₀P₃₀₀K₃₀₀ kg/ha + Pruning of 25% malformed flowers + Irrigation (14 days interval), T₂ = NAA (200 ppm)+ N₂₀₀P₃₀₀K₃₀₀ kg/ha + Pruning of 50% malformed flowers + Irrigation (14 days interval), T₃ = N₂₀₀P₃₀₀K₃₀₀ kg/ha + Deblossoming (January) + Irrigation (14 days interval), T₄ = NAA (200 ppm)+ N₂₀₀P₃₀₀K₃₀₀ kg/ha + Deblossoming (January) + Irrigation (14 days interval), T₅= Control (Untreated) were included in this study. It was found that T₄ treated plants resulted in highest (12.75%) fruit retention per plant and the lowest (8.25%) was obtained from T₅ (control) treated plants at 60 DAFS. Treatments T₄produced the highest (60.25) number fruits per plant and the lowest (20.25) was obtained from T₅ (control) treated plants. The highest (13.12 t/ha) yield was obtained from T₄treatment followed by T₃ treatment (10.24 t/ha) and the lowest (4.64 t/ha) was found in T₅ (control) treatment. The highest (3.39) BCR was obtained from T₄ treatment. It may be concluded that T₄ treatment might be considered as the best integrated crop management practices in respect of fruit set, fruit retention, yield and also economics.

Objectives:

1. To control management of malformation in Bangladesh.

2. To malformation through integrated management practices and increasing yield of mango.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out from July 2002 to July 2003 at Germplasm Centre (GPC), FTIP. Department of Horticulture, BAU, Mymensingh. The single-factor experiment was conducted in randomized complete block design (RCBD) with 4 replications. The treatments were T₁ = NAA (200 ppm)+ N₂₀₀P₃₀₀K₃₀₀ kg/ha + Pruning of 25% malformed flowers + Irrigation (14 days interval), T₂ = NAA (200 ppm)+ N₂₀₀P₃₀₀K-₃₀₀ kg/ha + Pruning of 50% malformed flowers + Irrigation (14 days interval), T₃ - N₂₀₀P₂₀₀K₃₀₀ kg/ha + Deblossoming (January) + Irrigation (14 days interval), T₄ = NAA (200 ppm)+ N₂₀₀P₃₀₀K₃₀₀kg/ha + Deblossoming (January) + Irrigation (14 days interval) and T₅ = Control (Untreated). Plants used were 4 to 5 years old. The variety of Amrapali was used in this study. Each treatment was composed of ten malformed inflorescence. The plant spacing was 2.5m x 2.5m. Malformed flowers were removed after panicle initiation but before fruit set. Plants, which were severely affected by floral malformation in previous season, were selected for the treatment. Fertilizers were applied after harvest of the fruits. Before fertilization, weeding was done and basin type furrows around the trees 100 cm away from the base of the tree were prepared with spade. Fertilizers were applied in the furrows and then thoroughly mixed with the soil. The stock solution of NAA along with adhesive agent (Tween-80) was sprayed individually by hand sprayer. Spraying was done on the 1^st October and 1^st November. Control plants were sprayed with water including adhesive agent. Deblossoming was done at bud burst stage. Only malformed buds were deblossomed by hand. Deblossoming was done in all malformed twigs except control. The recorded parameters were total number of inflorescences per plant; number of healthy inflorescences per plant; number of malformed inflorescences per plant; % healthy inflorescences per plant; % malformed inflorescences per plant; number of fruit retention per inflorescence; fruit retention per plant (%); fruit weight (g); yield/plant; yield (t/ha) and total soluble solids (TSS%).

Achievement/Findings:

Among different treatments, treatment T4 resulted in the highest number of inflorescence, highest number and percentage of healthy inflorescence and lowest number and percentage of malformed inflorescence per plant. Fruit retention per inflorescence and per plant, total number and weight of fruit per plant and per hectare yield were resulting highest in T4 treatment as compared to control. From the above discussion, it may be concluded that treatmentT₄ i.e. = NAA (200 ppm)+ N₂₀₀P₃₀₀K₃₀₀kg/ha + Deblossoming (January) + Irrigation (14 days interval) is effective in controlling malformation leading to maximum yield.
