Socio-economic Status of Farming Communities Based on Utilization of Coconut(cocos Nucifera L.) in Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A survey conducted in 23 major coconuts growing areas of Bangladesh reveals that coconut is grown at the homesteads and all the growers are mainly small holders and adopted coconut as a subsistence crop. Diversity of coconut in the community resulted from multiplication of varieties with desirable characters. Very little of the household income was spent for the production of coconut. Decision of planting of coconut and selection of verities were done by male farmers, although women were actively involved in the production system. Low income from coconut was responsible for decreasing yield and its productivity. The highest production of nut was recorded in medium income people. People of small farm family harvest coconut mostly at tender stage while the large farm family harvested matured nut. Lack of good planting materials, high prices of inputs and poor marketing system were identified as the major constraints of coconut production.

Objectives:

To asses on farm biodiversity influencing coconut yield and farm productivity.

Methodology:

A survey was conducted in 23 major coconut-growing of Bangladesh following coarse grid map sampling method, from July 2001 to October 2002. District wise total areas under coconut were utilized to determine the sampling sites. Sampling communities were selected based on the discussion with the Dept. of Agriculture Extension. Thirty households from each site were randomly selected excluding the household having very few tree species. The number of surveyed household totaled 960 (23 x 30 =690). Frequencies of each class of different locations were worked out to determine the average data. The data were collected by personal interview method based on a structured interview schedule. Information was recorded through interview of family members like head of the family and housewife. Data were collected mainly on varieties and agronomic practice they followed to grow coconut, use of coconut, family income and expenditure as well as family demography. The enumerators for data collection were trained up to conduct they survey. The communities of each site were grouped into five categories based on the size of land holding as follows: A= landless or near to land ness, B= marginal (100-500 decimal), C= Small (500-1000 decimal), D= medium (1000-1500 decimal), E=>Large (1500 decimal). Collected data were summarized and means and percentages were calculated. The respondents were sorted according to above categories. Chi-square test was used to test the similarity of observed frequencies of a particular character to the exacted values of equal distribution.

In Bangladesh coconut is grown is mostly at the homesteads and the growers are small holders. Almost all the family members from small to medium households were involved in production of coconut. Planting more coconut in the homesteads could increase production of coconut without decreasing cultivable lands. Agriculture, business and service were the recognized income sources of the respondent families. Small income from coconut was responsible for decreasing its yield production. Small holders took up coconut as a subsistence crop. Decision of planting of coconut in the production of variety was done by male farmers, although women actively participated in the production system. Multiplication of variety with diverged characters within farming community resulted in the conservation of diversity. There is scope of planting 10-15 coconut seedlings in about 10 millions farm households as well as in 20 million hectares of fallow lands in the costal belt of the country.
