An experiment was conducted to evaluate the influence of integrated weed management and spacing on the yield of transplanted Aman rice (cv. BRRl Dhan37). The experiment comprised of six weed management treatments viz. no weeding, two hand weeding at 15 and 40 days after transplanting (DAT), one weeding with BRRI push weeder at 15 DAT + one hand weeding at 40 DAT, pre-emergence application of M.Chlor 5G (Butachlor) at 5 DAT + one hand weeding at 40 DAT, pre-emergence application of Oxastar 25 EC (Oxadiazon) at 5 DAT + one hand weeding at 40 DAT, pre- emergence application of Rifit 500EC (Pretilachlor) at 5 DAT + one hand weeding at 40 DAT and three plant spacing viz. 20cm x 10cm, 25cm x 15cm and 30cm x 20cm. The results showed that among the six weed management treatments, Pretilachlor + one hand weeding gave the best weed control and ultimately produced the highest effective tillers hill-1 (12.5) and contributed to the highest grain yield (3.60 t ha-1). Among the spacing, the widest spacing (30cm x 20cm) contributed to the highest weed control efficiency. Transplanting at 25cm x 15cm and application of Pretilachlor plus one hand weeding was found to be the best treatment and it obtained the highest grain yield (3.87 t ha-1) and BCR (1.79) while the second highest yield (3.82 t ha-1) and BCR (1.73) was obtained with transplanting at 30cm x 20cm and use of BRRI push weeder + one hand weeding.

To find out the influence of integrated weed management and spacing on the yield of T. Aman rice.

The experiment was conducted at the Agronomy field, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka during July-December, 2006. The experiment comprised six weed management treatments viz. no weeding (Wo. two hand weeding at 15 and 40 days after transplanting (DAT) CWj), one weeding with BRR1 push weeder at 15 DAT + one hand weeding at 40 DAT (W-0, pre-emergence application of M.Chlor 5G (Butachlor) @ 13 kg ha-1 at 5 DAT + one hand weeding at 40 DAT (W4), pre-emergence application of Qxasiar 25 EC (Oxadiazon) ) @ 1.9 1 ha-1 at 5 DAT + one hand weeding at 40 DAT (W5), pre- emergence application of Rifit 500EC (Pretilachlor) @ 0.97 1 ha-1 at 5 DAT + one hand weeding at 40 DAT (W6) and three plant spacings viz. 20cm x 10cm (S1). 25cm x 15cm (S2) and 30cm x 20cm (S3). The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design (factorial) with three replications. The size of an individual plot was 4.0 m x 2.5 m. The field was fertilized with Urea, TSP, MoP, Gypsum and Zinc Sulphate at the rate of 150, 90, 70. 60 and 10 kg ha-1, respectively. Twenty five days old seedlings were transplanted on the well puddled experimental plots on August 5, 2006 by using two seedlings hill-1. Other cultural operations were done properly as and when necessary. The crop was harvested plot wise at full maturity on December 2, 2006. The infesting species of weeds in the experimental plot were collected species wise at 30 and 60 DAT. The collected weeds were first dried in the sun and then in an electrical oven at  80± 5 °C until a constant weight was obtained. After drying, weight of each species was taken and weed biomass was expressed as g m-2 Weed control efficiency was calculated with the formula developed. Yield and yield components were taken from five randomly selected hills following standard methodology. Grain and straw yield and 1000-grain weight were adjusted at 14% moisture level. Biological yield and harvest index were also recorded. The data were statistically analyzed and the differences were adjusted by least significant difference (LSD) test at 5% level of significance. Simple economic analysis such as total cost of production, gross return, net profit and benefit cost ratio were also done.

The present study shows that weed infestation was one of the major constraints for obtaining higher yield to T. Aman rice and almost all agronomic characters decreased at 20cm x 10cm spacing and increased at 30cm x 20cm spacing except sterile grains panicle-1. But when it was calculated on unit area basis all the yield contributing characters were maximum at 25cm x 15cm spacing resulting in the highest grain yield (3.27 t/ha-1). Application of Pretilachlor (preemergence herbicide) with one hand weeding at 40 DAT maintaining plant spacing at 25cm x 15cm might be profitable of keeping weed infestation at minimum level. On the other hand, first weeding with BRRI rice weeder and then one hand weeding at 40 DAT with 30cm x 20cm plant spacing might be another option to suppress weed infestation as well as profitable rice cultivation.
