Effect of Soil Treatment on Disease and Insects of Cabbage ( Brassica Oleracea Var. Capitata L.)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted on-station and non-farm to test the effect of soil amendment with partly decomposed poultry litter, mustard oil cake, sawdust burning and cow dung to manage mortality caused by Pythium, fusarium, Rhizoctonia and Sclerotium. Except cow dung, other three soil amendments reduced incidence of seedling mortality due to damping off, root rot, root rot and fuasrial wilt by 17.5, 16.69 and 15.43% in research station and 24.7, 19.9 and 19.4% in farmer’s field respectively. On farm trial showed that the treatment produced higher number and healthy compared to control. So, farmers may practice soil amendment with POL, MOC and saw dust burning to grow healthy seedling of cabbage. Another experiment was conducted in farmer’s fields of Jessire, Bogra & Comilla to test the efficiency of treatments composed of soil amendment with POL and hand picking of insects’ pests, and soil amendment with cow dung for the management of insect’s pests and diseases of cabbage in main field. It was found that soil amendment with POL and hand packing insects’ diseased incidence of pests and disease and increased cabbage yield considerably. The treatment gave higher net income showing BCR of 2.6 in early crop and 3.46 in late crop. The result clearly showed that the farmers may use POL amendment to soil and hand picking of insect-pests to management diamondback moth and armyworm of cabbage to get higher income, especially in early crop.

Objectives:

To find out a suitable non-chemical method for management of seedling disease of cabbage.
to find out an effective management package to control insect pests and diseases of cabbage.

Methodology:

In three treatments, soils of seedbed were amended with partially decomposed poultry litter @ 3 t/ha, fresh mustard oilcake @ 500 kg/ha and 3 months decomposed cow dung @ 10 t/ha. In another treatment top soil of seedbed was heated by burning dry sawdust. Soil of control plots did not any treatment. Application of cow dung to seedbed is a common practice of farmers. The experiment was conducted on station Horticulture Research Centre, BARI, Gazipur during 2003-04. It was repeated in farmers field of a nearby village,Vora, Gazipur during 2003-04. The experiment was laid out following RCBD with 3 replication. Cabbage seed of variety K-K cross having germination capacity of 94.0% was sown on Sep 14, 2002 in 1m x 3 m seedbed. Another experiment was conducted in farmer’s fields to find out an effective management package to control insect pests and diseases of cabbage. Two treatments were maintained in this experiment. In one treatment (T₁), partially decomposed poultry litter was applied once to this field @ 3 t/ha at 20 days before transplanting; weekly hand picking of insect larvae starting from 3 weeks after transplanting and continued for 5 weeks. In another treatment (T₂), partially decomposed cow dung was applied to main field @ 10 t/ha before transplanting and spray of an insecticide Rapcoed of Symbush @ .01% for 5 to 8 times.

Variety Taki-621 was used Jessore and K-K cross in other two locations. The experiment was conducted both early and late season in season. One half was used for T₁ and another half for T₂. Data on insect infestation and disease incidence were recorded from the field each location by regular observation. Crop yield was recorded after harvest and benefit cost ratio was computed.

Achievement/Findings:

The result clearly demonstrated that increased plant growth n all the locations may be due to use of POL, which supplied various nutrient to the plants and effective control of the pests by hand picking. Similar result is reported by Schueter (1989) who stated that various types of agricultural waste suppressed different types of soil-borne plant disease by making plants more vigorous to withstand the attacks. use of healthy seedling, soil amendment with partially decomposed poultry litter and hand picking of insect pest may be recommended to control diseases and insect pests of the crop to achieve higher yield.
