Genetic Variability and Correlation Study in Proso Millet (pan/cum Miliaceum L.)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The genetic variability and correlation coefficnts were studied in 20 diverse strains of proso millet (panicum miliaceum L.) for eight Important agronomic characters. Grain yield, 1000-grain weight and number of primary tillers/plant had a high degree of genetic variability. These traits were found to be highly amenable to selection, as indicated by high heritability along with high genetic advance. The grain yield/plant was correlated positively with grain weight and number of primary tillers, and negatively with days to flower and ear lengths.

Objectives:

To study the variability and correlations among important characters in this cereal.

Methodology:

Twenty genotypes of prosomillet with diverse graphical origin were grown in a randomized complete block design with three replications during rabi season of 1985-86 at ear length. Grain yield/plant showed the heritability estimate of 83.56%. High estimates of broad sense heritability has been observed by Sandhu et al. (1974) and Athwal and Singh (1966) for grain yield/plant in foxtail millet. Although the heritability estimates provide the basis for selection based on the phenotypic performance, the estimates of heritability and genetic advance should always be considered simultaneously (Johnson et al., 1955) because high heritability may not always necessarily be associated with high genetic advance. Genetic advance was higher for grain yield, grain weight and number of primary tillers/plant. However, it was low in magnitude for days to flower, days to maturity, plant height and ear length. High heritability along with high genetic advance indicate the additive gene action in the trait concerned (Panse, 1957). Thus, positive selection for grain yield, grain weight and number of primary tillers/plant would be effective in improving this crop.

Achievement/Findings:

The correlation study indicates that grain weight and number of primary tillers/plant were the maximum contributors for grain yield in proso millet.
