Hybridization Among the Selected Genotypes of Tossa Jute

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Eleven genotypes including four cultivated varieties of tossa jute namely O-9897, BJRI Tossa Pat-4, BJRI Tossa Pat-5, BJRI Tossa Pat-6, O-4, JRO-524, Corchorus olitorius var incisifolius, Acc-1033, Acc-1043, Acc-1051 and Acc-1056 were grown in the green house premises on September 2013. Twice sowing with the same materials were done after 15 days interval to ensure synchronization of flowering. The pods were maintained and seeds collected separately. At the time of flowering, a total of 100 crosses were made. Forty-two successful crosses were obtained from 19 cross combinations.

Objectives:

1.To make Hybrid helps to create recombinant by accumulating desirable genes for both qualitative and quantitative characters from diverse parents.

2.To combine, possible to combine the desirable characters and to select superior progeny for varietal improvement program.

3.To accumulate desirable characters such as less photo and thermo sensitivity, tolerant to biotic and abiotic stresses etc.

Methodology:

Eleven genotypes including four cultivated varieties of tossa jute namely O-9897, BJRI Tossa Pat-4, BJRI Tossa Pat-5, O-3820, O-4, JRO-524, Corchorus olitorius var incisifolius, Acc-1033, Acc- Acc-1043, Acc-1051 and Acc-1056 were grown in the green house premises on September 2013. Twice sowing with the same materials were grown after 15 days interval to ensure synchronization of flowering. The pods were maintained and seeds were collected separately.

Achievement/Findings:

At the time of flowering, a total of 100 crosses were made among the parental lines in all possible combinations . Among them seeds obtained only from 42 crosses with 19 cross combinations.
