Development of High Yielding Jute Variety BJRI Tossa Pat-5.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

In order to develop a high yielding jute variety through hybridization for increased jute yield, experiment was conducted at the different Regional Stations of BJRI namely Manikganj, Faridpur, Rangpur and Kishoreganj during the period 2004-2008. The parents were BJRI variety O-4 (late sowing photosensitive variety) and Uganda red collected from Uganda. The BJRI Tossa-4(O-72) another high yielding jute variety was compared as check variety. The developed variety O-795 is less photosensitive and performed better than the existing variety O-72 in all levels of testing. The fibre quality is better than the other variety O-72 and O-9897. The stem is tall, reddish, unbranched, cylindrical, length-breadth of leaves 2.5:1, stipule red, flower regular, sepals 5, deep yellow, fruit cylindrical, long pods, indehiscent pod, seeds bluish, 120-135 seeds/fruits.Based on the evaluation of the Technical committee of the National Seed Board advanced line O-795 was released as a variety and named BJRI Tossa Pat-5.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the different Regional Stations namely Manikganj, Faridpur, Rangpur and Kishoreganj of Bangladesh Jute Research Institute (BJRI) during the period 2004-2008. The candidate variety was O-795 which was developed by crossing between Uganda red collected from the African country Uganda and BJRI variety O-4 (late sowing photosensitive variety) and check variety was BJRI high yielding variety O-72. These two varieties were sown at 15^th March of the years in different stations of BJRI. Each variety was sown in 5 decimal areas. Inter and intra row spacing were 30cm and 5cm respectively. Standard dose of fertilizer was applied and followed normal agronomic practices. In the 2004 and 2005, advanced yields trials were performed. During, 2006, 2007 and 2008, zonal and on-farm yield trails were done in the BJRI stations as well as in the farmers fields of those stations. At 120 days after sowing plants were collected from each variety plot from an area of one square. Sample plants were taken to the laboratory and data were recorded for plant population, plant height, base diameter from each variety plot. Other plants were harvested and sank down into nearest pond for retting. Sample of both varieties (candidate variety and the check) were send to Seed Certification Agency (SCA) previously for DUS (distinctness, uniformity and stability) test. In the year 2008. The National Seed Board (NSB) Evaluation Team also collected data on plant population, plant height and base diameter per square meter. The Technical committee of the National Seed Board examined the collected data and report of National Seed Board (NSB) Evaluation Team. Based on the evaluation, advanced line O-795 was released as a variety and named BJRI Tossa Pat-5.

Achievement/Findings:

Early maturing, less photosensitive and high fibre yielding jute variety was of high demand from the farming community. To meet this demand breeding division made a cross between Uganda red (African germplasm) and BJRI variety O-4 (late sowing photosensitive variety) and thus developed O-795 with subsequent pure line selection. This is the first red-pigmented variety of tossa jute.
