Effect of Fungicides and Planting Materials on Two Leaf Disease Severity and Rhizome Yield of Turmeric (curcuma Longa L.)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Nine fungicides namely Agrized, Rodomil, Rovral 50 WP, Sulcox 50WP and Dithane M-45 @ .2%, Bavistin DF @ .1%, Tilt 250EC , Contaf 50EC and Folicur @ .05% were evaluated for their efficacy to control anthracnose and leaf blotch of turmeric. The crop was grown from two type of planting materials viz. Mutha and rhizome. The severity index value of anthracnose was 5.83 and that of the leaf blotch was 6.00 under control. It was reduced to 4.00, 5.17, 3.67, 4.17, 3.67, 4.67 & 4.33 due to six folair sprays with Tilt, Bavistin, Agrized, Ridomil, Sulcox, Dithane M-45, Contaf 5 EC and Folicur respectively. Except Rovral and Bavistin, spray of other seven fungicides significantly reduced leaf blotch severity index within the range of 3.67-4.50. Application of all fungicides increased yield by 21.69 to 446.23% over control. Effectiveness of the fungicides to increase yield was statistically similar. Influence of planting materials on the disease severity was not considerable. But plants raised from Mutha gave 21.41, 14.55 and 51.72% higher germination, plant height and rhizome yield respectively than rhizome. Plating Mutha and 6 spray of Dithane M-45 or Agrized @ .2% with 15 days interval may be practiced to control anthracnose and leaf blotch disease and to get higher rhizome yield of turmeric.

Objectives:

To identify the appropriate fungicides and planting materials to control anthracnose and leaf blotch.
To increase rhizome yield of turmeric.

Methodology:

Nine fungicides namely Agrized,Rodomil, Rovral 50 WP, Sulcox 50WP and Dithane M-45 @ .2%, Bavistin DF @ .1%, Tilt 250EC ,Contaf 50EC and Folicur @ .05% were tested in the present experiment under natural field conditions. Mutha and finger rhizome were used as planting materials of the crop. The experiment was conducted in the experiment field of Regional Agricultural Research Station, Ishurdi during 2007-08 turmeric growing season. It was laid out flowing 2 x 10 factorial experiments in a RCD design. The unit plot size was 4 m x 2m. The experimental plots were prepared following recommended procedures. Fertilizers Urea, TSP, MoP, Gypsum were applied at the rate of 120, 100, 120, 50 kg per hectare. The crop was planted maintaining 50 cm row to row and 25 cm hill to hill spacing. The fungicides were applied as foliar spray for six times at 15 days interval. The first spray was started with the onset of the disease. Severity of the disease was indexed on a 1-7 indexing scale as described by Mehta and Mandal with some modification, where 1= leaf free from infection, 2= 1-5% leaf area infected, 3= 5.1-10% leaf area infected, 4= 10.1-20% leaf area infected, 5= 20.1-30% leaf area infected, 6= 30.1-50% leaf area infected, 7= more than 50% leaf area infected. Data on plant height was recorded at final stage fresh rhizome yield was recorded after harvest.
