Efficiency of Meister-10 and Urea-nimin as Controlled Release Nitrogen Fertilizers on Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted on an Old Brahmaputra floodplain soil at Bangladesh Agricultural University Farm, Mymensingh to investigate the efficiency of Polyolefin resin coated urea (Meister-10), and Urea-Nimin (Nimin-coated urea) as controlled release N fertilizer on dry matter, grain yield and N uptake by rice plant (cv. BRRI dhan30). The application of Meister-10 significantly increased dry matter yield, N content at maximum tillering and panicle initiation stages. Application of Meister-10 also significantly increased both rice grain and straw yields of BRRI dhan30. The maximum grain yield (5.30 t ha^-1) was recorded under Meister-10 treatment, which was statistically significant, compared to other treatments. The increase of grain yield was 37% over Nimin-urea and 75% over control. The second highest grain yield of rice (3.88 t ha^-1) was obtained under Urea-Nimin applied at the same rate of N as that of Meister-10 (60 kg N ha^-1), while under control treatment the grain yield was 3.02 t ha^-1.

Objectives:

To compare the efficiency of Meister-10 and Urea-Nimin as controlled release nitrogen fertilizers and urea as conventional nitrogen fertilizer on growth, grain yield and N uptake at different stages of growth and at harvest by rice plant.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at the field Laboratory of Soil Science, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh under the soil series, ‘Sonatola’ and Agro-ecological zone of Old Brahmaputra floodplain. The trial was conducted in the Aman season (August-December) of 2006. The soil was characterized by silt loam in texture with pH 6.4, organic matter content 1.57%, CEC 14 meq/100 g soil, total N 0.09%, available P 11.00 ppm and exchangeable K 0.16 meq/100 g soil. Treatments used in the experiment were: T₁ – Control (N₀), T₂ – Meister-10 (60 kg N ha^-1), T₃– Urea-Nimin (45 kg N ha^-1), T₄– Urea-Nimin (60 kg N ha^-1), T₅– Urea (45 kg N ha^-1), and T₆– Urea (60 kg N ha^-1). Phosphorus, potassium and sulphur were applied as TSP (20 kg P ha^-1), MOP (50 kg K ha^-1) and gypsum (18 kg S ha^-1), respectively. All the fertilizers with 1/3^rd of urea were applied as basal and the rest of urea were applied in two equal installments, one month and two months after transplanting of rice seedlings. Seedlings of 39 days old were transplanted in the experimental plots on 12^th August, 2006. Plant spacing used was 20 cm × 20 cm. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. Urea-Nimin was prepared by coating granulated urea with Nimin. Nimin is a concentrated neem extract, which contains as much as 5% neem bitters responsible for nitrification inhibition in soils. It is self adhesive. Meister-10 is a slow release N fertilizer developed in Japan. BRRI Dhan30 was used as the test crop. Eight hills per plot were collected randomly for dry matter analysis at maximum tillering and panicle initiation stages. Data on yield contributing characteristics were recorded similarly from 8 hills randomly collected from each plot at harvest stage.

Achievement/Findings:

Meister-10, a controlled release N fertilizer could be a better source of N fertilizer for rice production in Bangladesh, which would substantially increase the yield of rice grain. Similarly, Urea-Nimin can also reduce N losses under wetland rice and enhance rice yield over conventional urea application. Hence, these two controlled release N fertilizers are potential sources of N to be considered for trials at the farmers’ fields for increased rice production in the country.
