Three variable nutrient levels and eight traditional Aman rice varieties were evaluated for yield and yield components. Variable nutrient levels did not produce any significant effect on yield and yield components. Grain yield ranged from 3.51 to 3.79 t ha-1 irrespective of nutrient level. Producing higher yield without nitrogen application indicated that the varieties had better efficiency to utilize the native nitrogen or had the ability to produce considerable grain yield through efficient utilization of very lower level of soil nitrogen. Grain yield of traditional rice ranged from 3.32 to 4.42 t ha-1. Barud, a bold seeded local variety showed out-standing performance by producing significantly higher yield along with associated characters. Small seeded non-arometic variety Kamerga chickon produced a good yield (3.88 t ha-1) which was supported by the greater ability to produce more than 80% productive spikelets. Tiller production of traditional rice varieties attained the peak 55 days after transplanting (DAT) n all the nutrient levels. By 15 DAT 30% tillers were developed while 64% by 25 DAT, 82% by 35 DAT and 94% by 45 DAT. Around 20% tillers did not produce any panicle. The variety Barud was the tallest (140.60 cm) while Badiruzzaman, Golapi Basfulchikon, Malanchi and Tulshimala were intermediate plant stature (129.88-137.72 cm); Laichi had shorter plant stature (104.54 cm).

To evaluate plant height, tiller production, yield and yield components of traditional Aman rice varieties under variable nutrient levels.

The field experiment was conducted at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibar Rahman Agricultural University (BSMRAU) during Aman growing season, 2003. There were three nutrient levels viz., (i) Zero Nitrogen (ii) Added nitrogen (nitrogen 80 kg/ha) and (iii) Cowdung (10 t ha-1; oven dry basis) and eight traditional Aman rice varieties viz., V1- Badiruzzaman, V2- Golapi Basfulchikon, V3- Laichi, V4- Banshful chikon, V5-Malanchi, V6- Barud, V7- Kamarga chikon and V8- Tulshimala were included as treatment in the experiment. The trial was done in split-plot design with three replications having unit plot size 5 cm × 3 cm. The levels of nutrients were arranged in main plots and rice varieties in sun-plots. The major soil chemical properties of the experimental field were total nitrogen (N) 0.11%, phosphorous (P) 2.72 µ g g-1 soils. Seeds were soaked on 24 July, 2003. The sprouted seeds were sown in a well-managed seedbed. Necessary care was taken in the seedbed. Fertilizers @ 20-40-10 kg ha-1 of P-K-S were applied as basal except cowdung treatment plots. Thirty-one day old seedlings were transplanted with a spacing of 25 cm × 15 cm on 28 August, 2002. Nitrogen in the form of urea was top dressed as per treatment 15 days after transplanting (DAT), 35 DAT and 55 DAT. Intercultural operations and plant protection measures were taken as and when necessary. Destructive plant sampling for plant height and tiller counting from three hills of each of plots were done each time at 10 day intervals starting from 15 DAT and continued up to 85 DAT. Recommended methodology were practiced for the determination of yield and yield components. ANOVA was performed and means were compared by DMRT using MSTATC. Beside this, raw data were compiled and graphs were prepared using Microsoft Excel.
