Integrated Use of Inorganic Fertilizers with Organic Manure in Maize-mungbean/sesbania-t.aman Rice Cropping Pattern and Its Impacts on Soil Fertility.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Field experiment were conducted over three years during 2001-2004 at BAU, Mymensingh using farmyard manure, dhaincha, mangbean residue along with inorganic fertilizers in Maize-Mungbean/Sesbania –T.Aman rice cropping pattern. Maize was grown with organic/inorganic fertilizers followed by GM/MBR before transplanting of T.Amam rice. Integrated use of manure and inorganic fertilizers produced comparable grain yield of maize with the chemical fertilizers alone irrespective of moderate of high, yield goal basis. The incorporation of Susbania biomass and mungbean residue along with inorganic fertilizers for MYG produced identical grain yields of T. Amam rice compared to fertilizers applied for HYG. After three years of cropping, the nutrients status of soils in control, follow and mungbean residue removal plots showed a decreasing trend while incorporation of Susbania biomass and mungbean residue had a positive effect on soil fertility. From this study it may be concluded that addition of mungbean residues or susbania biomass to fertilizers schedule ensure higher crop productivity and sustain soil fertility in maize-mengbean/susbania- T.Amam rice cropping pattern.

Objectives:

To increase crop yield per unit area through the use of inorganic fertilizers and organic manure.
To buildup soil fertility, prevent soil, degradation and conserve soil health and environment.

Methodology:

It was laid out in a RCBD with 3 replications. Maize was sown in the first week of November and harvested in the first week of April. After harvest of maize, a mungbean seed was sown in second week of April and dhaincha seeds were sown in third week of May in plots as per treatments. Pods of mungbean were plucked twice of fourth week of June to obtain seed yield. Mungbean residue and Susbania biomass were incorporated to the soil before transplanting of Aman rice. Nitrogen contents of mungbean Stover and sesbania were determined. Aman rice was transplanted in the transplanted in the fourth week of July and harvested at fourth week of October. The full dose each of FYM, P, K, S, Zn, B and 1/3 of N were applied in maize at time of final land preparation. Rest of N was applied in two equal splits. For mungbean full dose of P, K, S were used basal during final land preparation. Biofertilizer was also used with seeds before sowing using gum acacia as the sticker as alternate source of nitrogen. Transplanted Aman rice received different doses of N, P, K, S fertilizers. Nitrogen was top dressed in three equal splits at 10, 35, 55 days after transplanting. The yield of all the drop was recorded. The seed/grain and straw/stover were analyzed for the determination of different nutrients. The soil of the experiment plots were collected at the end of three crop cycles and compared with the initial soil status.

Achievement/Findings:

In maize-Fallow-T.Aman rice cropping pattern, there is a scope for growing short duration legume crop after harvesting of maize. The seeds of mungbean could be plucked and the plant residues can be incorporated into the soil. Dhaincha plants could be grown for 55-60 days and the biomass might be incorporated into the soil one week before transplanting of T. Aman rice. Growing of mungbean and dhaincha after maize cultivation would reduce 14 and 19 kg N ha^-1 to the subsequent T.Amam rice. In maize-mungbean/dhaincha-T.Aman rice cropping pattern, legume residue incorporation along with inorganic fertilizers based on IPNS was found to be the best treatment in which fertilizers dose could be N₁₉₀ P₅₆K₁₃₀ S₄₅ Zn₄ B₂ kg ha^-1 for maize, inoculums along with P₁₀ K₁₂ S₆ Zn₁B₁ kg ha^-1 for maintain and N₈₀ P₁₀ K₅₂ S₇ kg ha^-1 for T. Aman rice is suitable for higher yield as well as to maintain the organic matter status of the soil and to protect soil fertilizer degradation in the long run.
