Screening of Different Varieties/lines of Chickpea Against Pod Borer, Helicoverpa Armigera (hubner)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Founeen chickpea lines and six released varieties were screened against pod borer damage during the rabi season of 2003-04 at Regional Agricultural Research Station Ishurdi, Pabna, Bangladesh. Different varieties/lines showed significant difference in the extent of pod damage. ICCY-98939 being statistically identical to ICCL-873 1 5. ICCY-98936, ICCY-95 1 38. ICCY-96020 and BARlchola 3 had the lowest pod damage (7.94%). Pod damage was the highest (33.60o/C) in ICC-49 18. The pest susceptibility rating was the lowest (4) in ICCL-873 15. ICCV-98936, ICCY-98939. TCCY-95 138 and ICCY-96020. Of them, the line lCCY-95 138 provided significantl y the highest yield (1866 kg/ha) followed by J CCY-98939 (1 700 kg/ha) and JCCV-96020 (1683 kg/ha). Yields of these three lines were higher than the released varieties. Li nes ICCL-873 15 and ICCV-98936 were poor yielder. The pest susceptibility rating was the highest (8) in ICC-49 18 which also had the lowest yield (888 kg/ha). JCCY -95 1 38, lCCV- 96020 and lCCY-98939 were the most promising lines in respect of pod borer resistance and yield potentiality. Of them ICCV-95 138 was the best line.

Objectives:

Exploiting the varietal resistance for pest management.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Regional Agricultural Research Station, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, lshurdi, Pabna, Bangladesh during the rabi season of 2003-04. Fourteen lines (ICCL 87315, I CCL 87220, ICCL 87322, ICCV 98936, ICCV 98939, ICCV 95 I 38, ICCV 96020, ICCV 97004, ICC 4918, BCX 91040-L BCX 91042-3, BCX 91044-3. BCX 9 1043- 1 and BCX 9 1040-3) and 6 varieties (BINA-chola 2. BINA-chola 3, BARI-chola 3, BARI-chola 4, BARI-chola 5 and BARI-chola 6) were screened against pod borer (H elicoverpa annigera). The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design (RCBD) wi th three replications . Varieties /lines were considered as treatment of the experiment. The treatments were randomly allotted in each block. The seeds of respective varieties/lines were sown on November 22, 2003 in rows with 50 em spacing. Uniform plant population was maintained by keeping 10 em plant to plant distance. The un it plot size was 2mx4m. Each unit plot contained 4 rows of each 4 meters length . NPK @ 20-40-20 kg /ha was applied at final land preparation . Normal intercultural operation s were done.

Achievement/Findings:

Among the tested varieties/ lines, five lines viz. ICCL- 87315, ICCV-98936, TCCV-98939, ICCV-95138 and ICCV-96020 have lowest PSR (4) value. Of them , two lines ICCL-873 1 5 and ICCV-98936 are poor yielder. Among the remaining three lines, the line ICCV-95138 provides significantly the highest yield (1866 kg/ha) followed by ICCV-98939 (1700 kg/ha) and ICCV -96020 (1683 kg/ha). The yield s of these three lines are even higher than the released varieties. Therefore, ICCV-95138, ICCV -96020 and ICCV-98939 are rated as the most promising lines in respect of pod borer resistance and yield potentiality. Of them, ICCV-95 1 38 is rated as the best line.
