Survey on Postharvest Practices and Losses of Hyacinth Bean in Selected Area of Bangladesh.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A survey was conducted for assessment of post harvest practices and losses of hyacinth bean during December 2008 to March 2009. Six hyacinth bean growing areas namely, Jessore, Bogra, Gaibanda, Chittagong, Narsingdi, Dhaka and Gazipur were selected for this study. Information were collected using pre-tested questionnaire from each growing area, equal number of growers, beparise, arathdars and retailers were selected for getting answers. Consumers were selected only in Dhaka and Gazipur areas. Some indigenous post harvest practices were observed to be followed in all the growing area mostly by the growers and /or beparies who were involved in harvesting. These practices were keeping the harvested hyacinth bean under the shade of trees of tunnel or carpet house. In case of hyacinth bean, beparies washed with same/dirty water. Nobody practices grading the hyacinth bean. The usual packaging practices observed were mainly bamboo baskets and big size gunny bags. None of the arathdars involved in packaging. The post harvest losses of hyacinth bean were 4.33% at harvesting, handling from orchard to selling point of distant market, 6.29%, 5.0% at arathdars level, 3% at retailers level and after buying to consumption by the consumers, 10%. Therefore, the gross post harvest losses from harvesting to consumption of hyacinth bean were calculated as 28.62%.

Objectives:

To know the existing post harvest practices and losses of hyacinth bean.

Methodology:

Six hyacinth bean growing areas namely Jessore, Bogra, Gaibanda, Chittagong, Narsingdi, Dhaka and Gazipur were selected for conducting this study. Ten growers, 10 arathdars, 10 beparis, 10 retailers were selected from each growing area for getting answer using pre-test interview schedules. Ten arathdars, 10 beparis, 10 retailers were selected in the urban marketing areas of Dhaka. Ten consumers were selected only in two urban areas from Dhaka and Gazipur. Data regarding postharvest practices and losses with other relevant factors were collected from the above regions during the harvesting season of hyacinth bean in December 2008 to March 2009.

In order to collect data for this study, 6 types of interview schedules; growers, beparies, pikars, arathars, retailer and consumer levels were prepared. The schedules were pre-tested and necessary modifications were made for ensuring consistency and applicability in actual field condition.

Achievement/Findings:

Some locally adapted postharvest practices were found to be followed by different points in hyacinth bean supply chain. The usual pre-cooling practices were found to be follow under the shade of the tree or polyethylene or carpet house the beparies. The beparies in all locations washed hyacinth bean in dirty water before shipment to different places. The packaging practices followed by the beparies and/or arathars were big size gunny sacks containing 9 to 16 mound of hyacinth bean. Post harvest losses of hyacinth bean were recorded as 4.33%, 6.39%, 5% and 10% 3% at growers, beparies, arathdars, retailers and consumers level respectively. Thus, the gross post harvest loss of hyacinth bean from harvesting to consumption was calculated high as 28.62%. These losses may be minimized through improved postharvest practices like proper method of precooking, sorting of infested and damaged pods, grading on maturity and washing with clean/chlorinated water before shipment to different places. Standard packaging size and avoiding overloading tendency may be other important tools to minimize the postharvest losses hyacinth bean.
