Yield Loss Assessment of Blackgram Due to Stemfly, Ophiomyia Phaseoli (tryon) Infestation

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study was carried out at Breeder Seed Production Centre. Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Debiganj, Panchagurh to assess the avoidable loss on five varieties of blackgram viz.. Barimah- 1 , Barimash-2, Barimash-3. Binamash- 1 and a Local variety against the stemtly, Ophiomyia phaseoli (Tryon ) infestation during the period from August to December 2003. Plan t growth parameters such as plant height. number of branch per plant and number of leaf per plant were significantly reduced due to the stemfly infestation . The number and weight of pods per plant, number and weight of grains per plant and 1000 seed-weight and the yield were influenced signitieantly by the stemfly. The avoidable loss in Barimash- 1. Barimash-2, Barimash-3, Binamash and the Local variety were 37.24%, 34.50%. 35.08% , 24.19% and 24.24%, respect ively.

Objectives:

To examine the avoidable grain-yield losses or black gram in Bangladesh due to stem fly by studying their incidence on plant growth parameters, yield and yield components.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in the field of Breeder Seed Production Centre, Bangladesh Agricultural Research institute. Debiganj, Panchagarh, Bangladesh during the period from August to December 2003. The experiments were laid out in paired plot design with six replications having unit plot size of 3.0 x 3.0 m keeping block to block and plot to plot distancc 1.0 m and 0.75 m. respectively. Spacing of row to row and seed to seed was 30 cm and I0 cm. respectively (Rahman and Miah 1997). Five varieties were used and they were- Barimash-1, Barimash -2, Barimash-3. Binamah and a Local variety. The plants were left for stemfly infestation to occur naturally and pesticide were not applied.

Achievement/Findings:

While calculating avoidable loss due to the infestation of stemfly it was found that a maximum loss of 37.24% incurred by Barimash - 1. The variety Barimash -3 ranked next to Barimash- 1 which gave 35.08% avoidable loss followed by Barimash- 2 (34.50%), Local variety (24.24%) and Binamash (24. 19%) . The stud y indicated that the losses may have been overcome if stemfly control measure was taken timely and properly.
