The Economics of Sesame Production in Two Selected Areas of Bangladesh.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The present study was conducted at Jessore and Kushtia district during 2008-09 to analyze the economic profitability, level of adoption by farmers and comparative advantage of sesame cultivation. The study revealed that the area and production of sesame registered positive growth rates. The overall growth rate of sesame production was higher that than of area due to higher productivity. The average yield of sesame was found to be 1.2 t/ha. The cost of production of HYV and local variety of sesame were Tk. 29496/ha and 28619/ha respectively. The farmers received higher net returns from HYV variety of sesame. Agronomic practices like method of land preparation, time of sowing and diseases and pest control measures were highly adopted by the sample farmers. Input like urea, MP, and gypsum had significant impact on HVY sesame production. The estimated DRC value for sesame production was found .33 which clearly indicate that the production of sesame in Bangladesh has comparative advantage rather than import. Scarcity and higher price of fertilizer was the major problem faced by the sesame farmers in the study areas.

Objectives:

Estimate the growth rate of area and production of sesame.
Measure the level of adoption of HYV.
Assess the profitability and interrelationship between inputs and outputs.
Determine the comparative advantage of sesame production.
Identify the constraints of sesame production.

Methodology:

The study was conducted in two district of Bangladesh namely Jessore and Kushtia. From each district, two upazilla namely Jessore sadar, Jhikorgaccha, Kushtia sadar and Bheramara were purposively selected on the basis of intensive sesame cultivation respectively. A total of 100 sample farmers taking 50 from each district whereas taking 25 from each upazila were selected randomly. Both primary and secondary data were used for this study. Primary data were collected from sample farmers with the help of a pre-designed and pre-tested interview schedules during the period of January to March 2009.secondary data were collected from different website.

Tabular method of analysis using average, percentage, ratio etc was mostly done in this study. Besides growth rate, DRC and Cobb-Douglas production function were also estimated.

The growth rate of area, production and yield of sesame were worked out by fitting a semi-log function of the following type:

Adoption index was calculated using the following formula:

Adoption Index= 100/ Recommended dose X farmers dose

DRC was estimated for evaluating the efficiency of production of sesame in relation to comparative advantage. It was calculated on import parity basis.

DRC= Cost of domestic resources and non-traded inputs for producing sesame per metric ton/ Value of tradable sesame per metric ton-Value of tradable inputs per metric ton.

The production of sesame islikely to be influenced by different factors. To determine the contribution of some important input on yield of sesame, the Cobb-Douglas production model was estimated because of the best fit of the sample data.

Achievement/Findings:

Most of the farmers in the study areas cultivated variety. In Kushtia farmers widely cultivated white seeded local varieties. The average yield of HYV sesame is higher than local variety. Optimum level of input use and time of operation are important for achieving higher yield and profits. Although HYV sesame is a profitable crop but it is very cash cost incentive crop there by high cash involvement may restrict sesame area expansion. Most of the coefficient had significant impact on the yield sesame. The study also shows that level of adoption in terms of agronomic practice is found to be higher level. Domestic resource cost value indicates that production of sesame has comparative advantage rather than import.
