Assessment of Variability of Floral and Yield Traits: I. Restorer Lines of Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An investigation was undertaken to study the genetic variability and character association for ten floral and yield related characters of twenty restorer lines of rice identified as male parent for use in commercial hybrid seed production. Highly significant mean sum of squares of genotypes were observed for all the trait s indicating the presence of wide range of variability among the lines studied. The high degree of genotypic variation indicated preponderance of additive gene effects. The range of variation was much higher for all the traits studied. The differences between GCV and PCV were low for all the traits except pollen diameter indicating additive gene effects. Heritability in broad sense (h² ) was high for all the traits except pollen diameter and moderate for anther breadth. High heritability as well as high to moderate CA and GA in percent of mean was observed for anther length, pollen sterility, flag leaf area, spikelet sterility, panicle characters and grain yield per hill indicating improvement could be done through selection. Panicle length showed significant positive association with grain yield.

Objectives:

To determine the out crossing as well as yield and its contributing characteristics of restorer lines to find out superior lines for commercial hybrid seed production.

Methodology:

Twenty restorer lines were grown in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Single row of 5m each constituted an experimental unit. Treatments were distributed in the experimental units through randomization by using the random number from calculator. Normal cultural practices were followed to raise the crop. Healthy 40 days old seedlings were transplanted in separate strips of the experimental field. In each strip 20x20 cm spacing between plants as well as rows to rows were maintained. Data on anther length, anther breadth, pollen diameter, pollen sterility, duration of anthesis, panicles per hill, panicle length, spikelet sterility, flag leaf area, and grain yield per hill were collected. All data were statistically analyzed. The analysis or variance was done according to Gouluen's method (Goulden 1959). Genotypic and phenotypic coefficients of variations were computed using standard procedures (Burton, 1952). Simple correlation coefficient for all the possible pairs of characters at phenotypic and genotypic levels were analyzed.

Achievement/Findings:

It might be concluded from the results that panicle length is the most important trait due to its low difference of GCV and PCV , high h²_b with moderate GA and GA in percent of mean, significant positive correlation and high positive direct effects. Flag leaf area and panicles per hill might also be considered as important traits due to their high genotypic and phenotypic variances, minimum difference of GCV and PCV, high h²_b with moderate GA and GA in percent of mean, insignificant but considerable positive correlation and high positive direct effects. Direct selection on the basis of these traits might be considered for the improvement of grain yield of 20 restorer lines.
