Induced Breeding and Larvae Rearing of Critically Endangeared Riverine Catfish Rita Rita (ham)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted the induced breeding of Rita rita (Ham) using carp PG extracts, ovaaprim and the effects of stocking density on growth and survival rates of produced larvae. Three doses of carpPG extracts viz. 90, 100, 110 mg/kg body weight of female were used while males were treated with 40 mg/kg body weight in all cases. Those of 100 mg/kg body weight were proved the most suitable in terms of ovulation (100%), fertilization (82.50 ± 6.455%) and hatching rates (62.75 ± 7.182%). In case of ovaprim, females were treated with .5 and 1.0 mg/kg body weight and males received a dose of .5 ml/kg body weight but both doses failed to ovulate the fish. The growth study was carried out under two stocking densities ( 1 larva and 2 larvae/1 of water) with 5 days-old larvae fed chopped tubificid worms ad libitum. Better growth and survival rates were found at stocking density of 1 larva/1.

Objectives:

To explore the effective doses of hormones on induction of ovulation of females and fertilization and hatching of eggs of Rira fish.

Methodology:

Required number of healthy male and female R. rita boods were collected from Old Brahmaoputra river nearby BAU, Mymensingh. The collected broods were reared in the raceway system (11.42 x 1.01 x 1.2 m³ ) where shelters were made in the raceway with bricks to natural condition. The fish fed with earthworms, tubificid worms, chopped and cleaned poultry viscera and flesh of different fishes like silvercarp, lata etc. daily twice ad libitum. For statistical analysis of data , a one way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was followed significant result were tested by using Tukey's Multiple Comparison test to identify significant difference among the mean. the statistical data analysis was carried out with the aid of the computer software SPSS.

Achievement/Findings:

It can now be clearly suggested that the dose of 100 mg carpPG/kg body weight is a more precise and effective dose for inducing ovulation in female. Fertilization and hatching rates of eggs of Rita were also higher at this dose. Stocking density of 1 larva/L showed a better growth and survival rates of larvae. However further experimentation is necessary with wider dose rates of ova prim and higher stocking densities of larvae/L of water to Standardize the ova prim dose for inducing ovulation in female and stocking density for larvae rearing respectively.
