Five different types of solar pump were tested at different times, suction and delivery heads. Among five solar pumps, two were locally designed and three were made by USA, Australia and China. BARI, USA and Australia made solar pumps were operated by 600 W solar panels. On the other hand, DU and China made solar pumps were operated by 1000 W solar panels. The average discharges of BARI, DU, USA, Australia and China made solar pumps were 60, 34, 100, 90 and 120 l/min, respectively. Yield of drip irrigated tomato (63.0 t/ha) was significantly higher than that of furrow irrigated tomato (53.5 t/ha). The yield of furrow irrigated brinjal (27.3 t/ha) was slightly higher than drip irrigated brijal (25.8 t/ha) but there was no significant difference between them. Water required for tomato cultivation in drip and furrow irrigation  during the season were 254 and 590 mm and those for brinjal cultivation were 228 and 453 mm, respectively. Water savings by drip irrigation method over furrow irrigation for tomato and brinjal were 57% and 50% respectively. Total water applied during the boro season by solar pump in the rice field in Magura was 1024 mm. Water required during boro season for rice cultivation in Magura was 1481 mm.

  Performance evaluation

(i) Select the suitable solar pumps for different irrigation systems based on the results of base line survey (ii) Test and evaluate of the technical performance of selected solar pumps for surface and ground water lifting (iii) Install and test the appropriate solar pumps in the selected areas for different types of irrigationfor rice and non-rice crops (iv) Make economic analysis and socio-economic impacts study of solar pump irrigation in the selected areas of the project.

Five different types of solar pump were tested at different times, suction and delivery heads. The specifications of the selected solar pumps are given in Table 1. Among five solar pumps, two were locally designed and three were made by developed countries (USA, Australia and China). BARI designed solar pump was made with 800 W dc motor coupled with 0.5 hp locally made centrifugal pump. Dhaka University (DU) designed solar pump was made with ac motor, 0.5 hp centrifugal pump, inverter (1000 W), charge controller and battery (24 V, 200 AH). The USA made solar pump was 0.5 hp suitable for surface water lifting and Australia made submersible solar pump was same capacity but suitable for surface and ground water lifting. The China made pump was 2.2 hp motor capacities suitable for both surface and groundwater lifting. BARI, USA and Australia made solar pumps were operated by 600 W solar panels. On the other hand, DU and China made solar pumps were operated by 1000 W solar panels. During testing of solar pumps, solar radiation, panel voltage, current, power, suction head, delivery head and discharge were measured. The solar pump was used for drip irrigation and furrow irrigation for tomato cultivation in the experimental field of FMPE division during rabi 2011-12. The soil type was clay loam. The plot size was 40 m × 13 m (520 m2). Six beds of tomato were irrigated by the drip method having three water tanks each of 500 liter water holding capacity. The drip sets were made with plastic pipes, water tank, capillary tubes, pegs etc. The tomato variety was BARI Tomato-14.Two rows of tomato were planted in each bed on 4 December, 2011. The age of seedlings was 31 days. Row to row and plant to plant distances were 60 cm and 40 cm, respectively. Cowdung 10.0 t/ha, urea 600 kg/ha, TSP 500 kg/ha, MP 200 kg/ha, zinc 10 kg/ha and boron 8 kg/ha were applied in tomato field. Total dose of cowdung, TSP, MP, zinc, boron and one third of urea (200 kg/ha) were applied as basal dose before final ploughing. Rest of urea (20 kg/ha) was applied after 20 days and 45 days after the date of planting. Tomato was harvested during the period of February to April 2012. Irrigation was applied when the soil moisture content became below the field capacity (FC=20% MC).
