Effect of Spent Mushroom Compost on Growth, Yield and Nutritional Status of Maize

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Pot experiments were conducted in the experiment site Jahangirnagar University, Savar, Dhaka to evaluate the effect of different levels of spent mushroom compost on growth, yield and nutritional status of maize. Seven treatments combinations of oyster mushroom and milky white mushroom at three different rates (10, 20, 30% kg-1 soil) were used in the experiment along with control, Solarized garden soil lots were used for filling pots. When spent mushroom compost was applied in appropriate combinations showed positive effect on growth, yield and nutrient contents of maize. Amendment with SMC enhanced the population of preexisting arbuscular mycorrhiza inoculum present in solarized soil and thus percent of root colonization in maize was significantly higher over the control. Irrespective of SMC types and their doses earliness in flowering by 7 to 11 days was observed against the control. Results indicated that 20% oyster SMC and 30% milky white SMC kg-1 soil were the best in respect of crop performance.

Objectives:

To evaluate the nutrient status and mycorrhizal colonization during growth of maize.
To determine nutrient content in maize grain.

Methodology:

Pot experiments were conducted in the experiment site Jahangirnagar University, Savar, Dhaka during 23 November, 2008 to 23 April, 2009. Spent mushroom composts (SMC) of Oyster and milky white mushroom were collected from National Mushroom Development and Extension Center, Saver. These were kept for 120 days earthen pot of 30 cm in size and little water was added to hasten biodegradation. The microbial, physical chemical and biochemical analysis were conducted at BARI, Gazipur. Soil and SMC P^H were determined by glass electrode P^Hmeter using soil: water suspension of 1:2.5 ratios as described by Jackson. Organic matter of the soil and compost were determined by wet digestion methods. The experiment was designed in CRD with four replications. There were seven treatments combinations viz, T₁ = control, T₂ = Milky white SMC ₁₀ , T₃ = Milky white SMC ₂₀ , T₄ = Milky white SMC ₄₀ , T₅ = Oyster SMC ₁₀ , T₆ = Oyster SMC ₂₀ , T₇ = Oyster SMC₃₀ respectively. Soil was sterilized using solarization method for 30 days. Seeds of maize var. BARI Maize-7 were collected from BARI. During pot preparation solar sterilized 6.5 kg soil, SMC @ 10, 20, and 30% kg-1 soil and fertilizer @ 120 N: 80P:80K: 60 Ca k kg in conjunction with the rate prescribed per hectare land was used in each earthen pot of 30 cm in size. Data on plant height, number of leaves per plant, stem diameter, length of internodes, flowering dates, length of inflorescences, length and diameter of cobs, number of grains per cob, weight of 50 grains, grains yield per plant were taken. Grains were collected from cobs, dried in an oven for 120 hs at 80⁰C. Data obtained from the experiments on different parameters were analyzed statistically using MSTATC software.

Achievement/Findings:

Finding of the present investigations clearly indicated that soil amendments with SMC are effective to promote the growth and yield contributing characters and yield of maize. Amendment with SMC was found to enhance the population of the pre-existing arbuscular mycorrhiza inoculums in soil. SMC being a cheap by product of mushroom industry may be used effectively for improving plant particularly homestead and nurseries.
