The study was conducted to assess the change in seed chemical composition and its relations with the quality of jute under applied N and P. Tossa jute cv. O-9897 was grown with no N & P fertilizer, 30 kg N and 10 kg P, 60 kg N and 20 kg P, 90 kg N and 30 kg P, 120 kg N and 40 kg P, ha-1.  The chemical composition viz. total soluble protein, total free amino acid, total soluble sugar, oil content and ash content were estimated of jute seeds collected from those treatment combinations. The results revealed that the chemical composition of jute seed was changed under applied nutrient 120 kg N and 40 kg P ha-1 gave the highest soluble protein (22.49%), soluble sugar (12.17%) and ash content (7.24%) while lowest free amino acid (1.56%) and oil content (13.74%). Conversely, the lowest soluble protein (19.63%), soluble sugar (11.34%), ash content (6.12%) and the highest free amino acid (2.10%) and oil content (15.06%) were estimated from the treatment with no N and no P fertilizers. Other treatment combination showed intermediate change in chemical composition of jute  seed under applied N. moreover, presence of soluble protein and soluble sugar in jute seed have great implication on seed quality as there exists positive correlation of germination percentage with total soluble protein and total soluble sugar content of jute seed.

  1. To determine the chemical composition of jute seed.
  2. To asses the changes in chemical composition of jute seed as influenced by N and P fertilizer.
  3. To fine out the relationship between chemical composition and seed quality of jute.

The germination rest and chemical composition of jute seed viz. total soluble protein, total free amino acid; total soluble sugar, oil content and ash content were determined using following methodology. Germination test: one hundred pure seeds of each treatment combination were placed in Petri dish containing filter paper soaked with distilled water. For each test, four Petri dishes were used. The Petri dishes were placed in germinator at 300C in 12/12 hs alternative dark and light for 5 days. Seedlings were counted every day up to the completion of germination at fifth day. A seed was considered to be germinated as the seed coat ruptured and radical came out up to 2 mm length as per ISTA rule. Germination percentage was calculated using the following formula: Germination (%) = No. of seeds germinated/ no. of seeds tested x 100. Ash content estimation: the ash content of jute seed was determined by hearting the oven-seeds at 5750C in a muffle furnace until the ash weights were constant according to Gadgil et al. Oil content estimation: the oil percentage was estimated Gadgil et al. from moisture free seed meal by solvent extraction using other petroleum ether (boiling point 600C to 800 C) in a Soxhlet apparatus for eight hours. The meal was pre-dried two grams of meal was used for the estimation of oil. No further oil was recovered from the residue after 8 hs of refluxing. All data were statistical analysis of (ANOVA). EXCEL and MSTAT programs were used wherever appropriate and the means were compared according to LSD test.
