Stability Analysis for Seed Yield and Its Components in Soybean (glycine Max (l.) Merrill)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Data on five characters of 15 genotypes of soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merrill) grown at Joydebpur, Hathazari and Dumki (Patuakhali) revealed considerable influence of genotype x environment interaction for all the characters except days to maturity. The linear component of genotype x environment interaction was found significant for 100-seed weight; while significant values for non-linear component were observed in all of the characters except days to maturity and 100-seed weight. None of the genotypes showed reasonable stability on grain yield. However, the line MTD-459, Beagunkong and G-2261 may be considered suitable in poor environments and the yield of Pb-1, Malabar and G-2 may be improved through better management practices. The small seeded line Acc-1222 may be used in breeding programme to evolve lines for longer seed viability.

Objectives:

To identify the stable genotypes from some exotic soybean lines I varieties , suitable for different regions characterized by varied environmental conditions in the country.

Methodology:

Thirteen exotic soybean enotypes received from Indonesia and two local cultivars were used in the experiment conducted at three locations viz . Joydebpur , Hathazari and Dumki (Patuakhali) during rabi season of 1993-94. The experiment was laid out in RBD with three replications. Observations on plant height, number of pods, 100-seed weight and seed yield per plant were recorded from 10 randomly selected plants of each treatment Days to maturity was noted when 90% plants become mature. Stability parameters were estimated according to the method proposed by Eberhart and Russell (1966).

Combined analysis of variance showed the highly significant mean sum of square due to genotypes for all the characters.The mean sum of square due to environments was also highly significant and suggested the differences among the environments (location) and their considerable influence on the expression of different characters of soybean genotypes under study. The significant mean sum of square for G x E interaction was also pointed out the variation of yield and other characters of the genotypes over environments except days to maturity. The genotype Pb-1 was found stable in maturity due to its near unit regression value and non significant S2di value . The genotypes China-2, Toyosoju , X- 2581-KI-ITD matured early (85-86 days). Here all the genotypes showed insignificant linear component (regression coeffic1ent) except the line GC-8234-7-2, whereas the two genotypes Beagunkong and Acc-1222 showed non linear (deviation from regression) sensitivity. Adaptability of 15 soybean genotypes by testing at three locations indicated that none of the genotypes showed remarkable stability regarding grain yield. However, the line MTD-459, Beagunkong , G-2261 may be considered for unfavorable environments; with the cultivar Pb- 1, Malabar and G-2 may be considered for favorable environments . The genotype Acc- 1222 may be used in breeding program to evolve smaller grain size which is suitable for longer seed viability. Similarly the recommended variety Pb-1 was found stable in maturity which can also be used in breeding programme to achieve it.
