Quality Assessment of Spinach Varieties Grown at Different Sowing Dates

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was carried out at the laboratory of the Department of Horticulture, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Gazipur, during winter season (November 2005 to April 2006) to assess the nutritional quality of spinach varieties planted at different dates, in the shallow Red-Brown Terrace Soil. Three varieties (Pusha . Rohini and All green) and three sowing dates (November 24, December 9 and December 24) were used as treatment variables. Just after harvest, crops were thoroughly cleaned and used for biochemical analysis. Sowing dates had no significant effect on nutritional quality of spinach. The amount of water content (%), dry matter (%), ascorbic acid and 13-carotene were varied significantly due to varietal differences. Among the three varieties, Rohini resulted highest water content (93.52%) and maximum dry matter (7.39%) was produced by All green variety whereas, the Pusha variety contains the highest amount of ascorbic acid (49.18 mg/100g) and 13-carotenc (8.48 mg/100g).

Objectives:

To asses nutritive value of fresh vegetables of selected spinach varieties grown at different sowing dates.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at the laboratory of Horticulture Department at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Gazipur, during winter season (November 2005 to April 2006). Three spinach varieties namely Pusha (V₁), Rohini(V₂) and All green(V₃) were used as plant material which were sown at three different sowing dates at 15 days intervals from November 24 to December 24, 05. The experiment was laid out in the two factors RCBD with three replication. Harvesting was done by uprooting the whole plants at 43 days after sowing. The harvested crops were thoroughly cleaned and used for biochemical analysis. ln that regard, to determine the water content (%) and dry matter(%), the fresh samples were weighed and first sun dried for 72 hours then oven dry for 48 hours at 80°C temperature to make them totally water free. Again the ascorbic acid and P-carotene was determined by following the procedure of Pleskov (1976) and Nagata et al., (1992) respectively. Achievement/Findings:

As it was evident that, sowing dates did not affect ascorbic acid content significantly, it varied according to the change of varieties in case or the interaction of varieties and different sowing dates . Here also the ascorbic acid content was highest (49.08 mg/ 100 g) at V₁ and lowest at V₂ (30.55 g) was resulted with more or less all sowing date combination. But considering the interaction, highest result provided by V₁S₁ combination (50.20mg/100g) which was statistically similar with V₁S₂, V₁S₁ and lowest was V₂S₁ (24.70) that was also similar with V₂S₂ and V₂S₁ combination .
