Growth and Yield of Okra as Influenced by Alley Size and Hedgerow Pruning Interval in Hill Slope

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at the Hill Agricultural Research Station, Khagrachari from M ay 2002 to November 2004 to find out the effect of alley size (3.0 m, 4.0 m and 5.0 m) and hedgerow pruning interval (I month, 2 month and 3 month) on the yield and yield components of okra in hill slope condition during rainy season . The highest plant height (1 .83 m) was found from 3.0 m wide alley size but the highest percentage of branching plant (39.9%) and number of branch per plant were obtained from 5.0 m wide alley. The tallest plant (1.76 m) was recorded in 3 months pruning interval. The highest yield ( 16.14 t/ha) was produced by the plants grown in 3.0 m size alley. In case of hedgerow pruning interval, the highest yield (16.07 t/ha) was recorded from 2 months pruning interval that was statistically different with other two pruning intervals. The treatment combination 3.0 m size alley with I month pruning interval produced the highest yie?ld (17.67 t/ha).

Objectives:

To find out the effect of alley size and hedgerow pruning interval on the yield of okra in hill slope condition.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Hill Agricultural Research Station, Khagrachari from May 2002 to November 2004. The experiment was laid out in a split plot design with three replications. The main plot treatment s were 3 alley sizes viz. 3.0111, 4.0m and 5.0111. The treatments in the sub-plot consisted of different pruning interval, namely I month, 2 months and 3 months. The okra variety used was BARI Dherosh-1. The unit plots were 3.0 x 2.4 m, 4.0x2.4m and 5.0x2.4 in size depending on alley size. Fertilizer s were used at the rate of 1 50, 100 and 150 kg/ha or Urea, TSP and M P respectively. Cowdung was used @ 10t/ha during land preparation. Intercultural operation s were done as and when necessary. Harvesting was started from 15 July and continued up to 30 November 2004. Data on plant growth and yield were recorded from 10 randomly selected plants. Collected data were subjected to statistical analysis by F-tst, and the differences among the treatment mean s were judged by Duncan's Multiple Range Test.

The results revealed that 3m wide alley with I month pruning interval of hedgerow might be appropriate alley size and pruning interval for okra production in the Northern and Eastern hill slope during rainy season
