Genetic Analysis of Some Yield Components of Bottle Gourd [lagenaria Siceraria (mol.) Standi.]

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study on yield components of 10 F1s and their five parents in 5 × 5 diallel (excluding reciprocals) of bottle gourd [Lagenaria siceraria (Mol.) Standi.], showed dominant gene actions for most of the traits except fruit number per plant, individual fruit weight and fruit yield. The highest heritability (84%) was observed for fruit length. The asymmetrical distribution of the positive and negative alleles at all loci was found for most of the characters. The Wr (offspring co-variance)/ Vr (parental variance) graphs exhibited incomplete dominance or partial dominance effect of genes for days to first harvest, fruit length and fruit yield while fruit diameter, number of fruit per plant and individual fruit weight was controlled by complete dominance gene actions. The graphical analysis revealed the existence of wide genetic diversity among the parents.

Objectives:

To gather information on the genetics of various bottle gourd genotypes.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Gazipur during the winter season of 2005/06. The seeds of ten F₁ crosses P₁ × P₂, P₁ × P₃, P₁ × P₄, P₁ × P₅, P₂ × P₃, P₂ × P₄, P₂ × P₅, P₃ × P₄, P₃× P₅ and P₄ × P₅) of bottle gourd in a diallel set (excluding reciprocals) involving 5 parents (P₁= BGN1-4, P₂= BGN2-1, P₃= BGN2-3, P₄= BGN2-5 and P₅ = BGN3-5) were sown in a polybags on 25^th September 2005 and twenty days old seedlings were transplanted in the field on 05 October 2005. The experiment was laid out in RCB design with three replications. The unit plot size was 10.0 × 2.5m maintaining 2.0 × 2.5m spacing. The land was fertilized with cattle manure., Urea, TSP, MP, Gypsum, Boric acid and Zinc @ 20000, 175, 175, 150, 100, 12 and 12 kg/ha, respectively. The total amount of cattle manure, Urea, TSP, MP, Gypsum, Boric acid and Zinc and 1/3^rd of each of urea and MP were applied during final land preparation and in the pit. The rest of urea and MP were applied in four equal installments 20, 40, 60 and 80 days after transplanting. The intercultural operations (weeding and irrigation) were done as and when necessary. Data on days to 1^st harvest, during final land preparation fruit length (cm), fruit diameter (cm), number of fruits per plant, individual fruit weight (kg) and yield (t/ha) were recorded from three randomly selected plants per entry per replication. The data were analyzed for variance and partitioning of genetic components and Wr/ Vr graph was done following the method of Hayman (1954).
