Plants with application of nitrogen (80 kg ha-1) produced the  highest  leaf area index (LAI) of  4.23 followed by that of 10 t ha-1 cowdung (4. 12),  whi le  zero nitrogen resulted considerably in low LAI (3.70) at 65 days  after  transplanting (DAT). Traditional cultivar Barud produced the highest LA I (4.90) followed by Basfulchikon (4. 18).Crop growth rate (CGR) with added nitrogen was better, irrespective of traditional cultivars. CGR increased sharply after transplanting and reached at the peak between 55 to 65 DAT. Barud, the long duration traditional cultivar, showed the highest CGR (24.59 g g-1day-1). Badiruzzman,  Golapi, Malanchi and Barud maintained a higher average CGR value of 1 3.58 to 15.73 g g-1day-1 during  1 5 to 85 OAT, whil  Basfulchik on was the intermediate (13.41 g g -1 day-1). On  the contrary,  Laichi, Kamerga  chikon  and  Tulshimala  performed in lesser magnitude. The highest total dry matter (TDM) was observed in N (80 kg ha-l) treatment followed by cowdung treatment, while plant with zero nitrogen produced considerably low TDM at 85 OAT. Barud produced  the  highest TOM, which was marked ly over rated from 55 DAT and continued  up to the end.  Laichi and Tulshimala were ranked  the lowest  for TDM production. All  the traditional cultivars showed almost identical  trend of TOM over time under  variable nutrient levels.

To evaluate the extent of genotypic variability in growth parameters and yield levels of traditional cultivars under nitrogen limiting condition.

A field experiment was conducted at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University (BSMRAU) experimental farm during A man growing season of 2003. Three variable nutrient levels and eight traditional A man rice traditional cultivars formed the treatment variables. The experiment was conducted in split plot design with three replications. The variable nutrient levels that we re assigned in the main plots were i) no added Nitrogen,  ii)  added Nitrogen @ 80 kgha-1) and iii) cowdung (10 t ha-1 oven dry basis). Eight diverse rice cultivars that  were placed the sub-plots  were.  V1) Badiru zzaman , V2 )- Golapi, V3)- Laichi, V4)- Banshful chikon, V5)- Malanchi, V6 ) Barud, V7)- Kamarga chikon and  Y8)- Tulshimala. The major soil chemical properties of the experi mental field were as total  nitrogen (N)- 0.11%, phosphorous (P)- 2.72 g g-1 soil, potassium  (K ) -0.197 mcq  I00 g·l  soil, and sulfur (S)- 7.90 micro gg·l  soils. Seeds were soaked on 24 July, 2003. The sprouted seeds ·were seeded in a well-managed seedbed. Necessary cares were taken in the seed bed  for producing healthy seedlings. A general dose @ 20-40-10 kgha-1 of P-K-S was applied as basal except cowdung treated plots; where, a well-decomposed cowdung was incorporated  in the assigned plots . Thirty one days old seedlings were transplanted in 5 x 3m plot with a spacing of 25 x 15 em on 28th August, 2002. Nitrogen in the form of urea was top-dressed at  15, 35 and 55 days after transplanting (DAT). The experimental plots were kept clean b) hand weeding until flowering. Insect infestation was controlled by spraying Dimacrone while laniral  were placed in plots for minimize the rat attack during ripening stage. The crop was raised with supplemental  irrigation as and necessary and proper drainage was maintained  in case of over water due to heavy shower. Other intercultural operations were done as and when necessary.
