Effect of Different Organic Manures and Fertilizers on Growth and Yield of Potato

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted at the Tuber Crops Research Centre (TCRC) Farm, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Gaz ipur during th e period from December 2006 to March 2007 in order to quantity the effect of different organic manures and fertilizers viz. cowdung, poultry manure, mustard oil cake, farm yard manure, NPK fertilizers, and some Bangladeshi trade named organic manure s like Northern balanced fertilizer, Northern compost, Northern organic fertilizer (Jaibo sar), and Chook Chook on the growth and yield of potato cv. Diamant. The experiment consisting of I 0 treatments was laid out in the randomized complete block design with 4 replications. Organic manures had significant influence on growth, yield contributing characters and yield of potato. Results revealed that days required to 80% emergence of seedling, plant height, foliage coverage, number of stems per hill, days required to 80-90% senescence of leaves, weight of tubers per hill, number of tubers per hill, dry matter content of tubers, marketable yield (21.28 ton/ha) and gross yield (23.68 ton/ha) of tubers were the highest when Northern organic fertilizer was applied in combination with the recommendation dose of NPK treatments. The best economic return was also recorded in the same treatment showing a benefit cost ratio of 2.68.

Objectives:

To find out suit able organic manure(s) for the production of potato in order to get higher yield.

Methodology:

The present study was carried out to estimate the effect of different organic manures and fertilizers on the growth and yield of potato cv. Diamant at the Tuber Crops Research Center (TCRC) Farm, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Gazipur during the period from December 2006 to M arch 2007. The soil was silty clay loam. organic carbon 0.84%, total nitrogen 0.057%, available P 11.90 ppm, exchangeable Ca 6.5 meq 100 g^-1 soil, exchangeable K 7.44 meq 100 g^-1 soil, exchangeable Mg 3.30 meq 100 g^-1 soil, exchangeable Na 0.76 meq 100 g^-1 soil and CEC 14.40 m eq 100 g^-1 soil as descried by Jackson (1973). The average minimum and maximum air temperatures during the crop growing period were 15.05°C and 28.40^OC, respectively. The average relative humidity was 72.92%. The experiment consisting of 10 treatments was laid out in the randomized complete block design (RCBD) with 4 replications. The size of a unit plot was 3m x 3m. Two adjacent unit plots and blocks were separated by 50.0 cm and 1.0 m respectively. Sprouted seed tubers weighing on an average about 30-35 g were used and maintained a spacing of 60 em x 25 cm for planting. Thu each unit plot accommodated 60 seed tubers in 5 rows. Nitrogen 150 kg ha^-1, phosphorus 48 k g ha^-1 and potassium 165 kg ha^-1 in the form of urea, triple super phosphate and muriate of potash, respectively, were applied to all plots except con?trol.
