Studies on Heterosis in Eggplant (solanum Melongena L.)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Heterosis in eggplant was studied in a set of 9 x 9 diallel crosses excluding reciprocals. Analysis of variance indicated highly significant differences for all the characters suggesting the presence of genetic variability among the studied materials. The degree of heterosis was higher for number of fruits per plant, individual fruit weight and yield per plant, medium for fruit length and while relatively lower for remaining traits. Hybrid P4 x P5 manifested the highest heterosis over midparent (105. 12 per cent) and better parent (90.32 per cent) for yield per plant.

Objectives:

To develop high yielding F₁ varieties suitable for winter as well as summer/rainy season cultivation and to study the heterosis in eggplant.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the experimental field of Olericulture Division of HRC, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Gazipur during September 2002 and April 2003. Nine genetically diverse varieties/genotypes of eggplant viz., BL081, BL083, B009, Kazla, BL113, BL099, Uttara, BL114 and Islampuri were selected for the study. These were crossed in all possible combinations excluding reciprocals during September 2001 and April 2002. The seeds of 36 F₁ hybrids along with their nine parents were sown on the seedbed on 16^th September 2002. Forty-five days old seedlings were transplanted in the main field on 30^th October 2003. The experiment was laid out in a RCB design with three replications. The unit plot size was 7.5 x 0.7 m and 10 plants were accommodated in a plot with a plant spacing of 75 cm apart in single row maintaining a row to row distance of 70 cm. Data on days to first harvest, fruit length, fruit diameter, individual fruit weight, number of fruits per plant and yield per plant were recorded from five randomly selected plants per entry per replication. The significance of increase or decrease in F₁ hybrids over their corresponding mid parent and better parent were tested by comparing their means with the help of appropriate standard error values in percentage.

So it could be concluded that heterosis was not responsible to only fruit length or fruit diameter, but also responsible to individual fruit weight and number of fruits per plant. In the present study the cross combination P4 x P5 and the cross P5 x P8 manifested the highest heterosis over mid parent and better parent for plant yield and fruit weight respectively.
