Evaluation of Toxicities and Deposition of Different Plant Extract on Larvae of Pod Borer (maruca Vitrata) in Year Round Countrybean

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study was carried out in the Insecticide Toxicology Laboratory of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University (BASMRAU), Gazipur during January to March 2007 to evaluate the effect of six selected plant extracts. Extracts were NSK (Necm Seed Kernel) water extract, NSK ethanolic extract, neem oil, neem leaf extract, nisinda leaf extract and tomato leaf plus m arigold leaf extract at different concentration and evaluated on pod borers (Maruca vitrata) larvae of year round country bean to find out rate of mortality and deposition of concentration. Neem oil@ 10ml/l of water and NSK water extract @ 50g/l of water showed the best performance in respect of cumulative mortality of pod borer larvae. Tomato leaf plus marigold leaf extract also markedly reduced the survival of th e larvae as compared to control. The order of toxicity of six selected crude botanical extracts on larvae of pod borer was neem oil > NSK water extract > NSK ethanolic extract > tomato leaf > marigold leaf extract > neem leaf extract > nisinda leaf extract. There were no significant differences among the treatments for the deposit ion of various concentration of botanical formulations on larvae.

Objectives:

To identify the best method of extract ion based on simplicity, applicability and effectiveness of the extracts against pod borers of country bean.

Methodology:

The study was carried out in the Insecticide Toxicology Laboratory of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University (BSMRAU), Gazipur during January to March 2007 to evaluate six selected botanical extracts. These were T₁= Neem oil @ 10 m l/l, T₂ = Neem leaf extract @ 50g/l, T₃= NSK water extract @ 50g/l, T₄ = NSK ethanolic extract @ 50g/l, T₅= Nisinda leaf extract@ 50g/l and T₆ = Tomato leaf+ marigold leaf extract @ 1 OOg/l including control (T₇ = control). Deposition of extracts (weight gained), and mortality evaluation of 3rd instar larvae of pod borer, Maruca vitrata were evaluated in the laboratory.

Achievement/Findings:

The results indicate that the selected crude botanicals caused larval mortality of Maruca vilrata at variable level and the percent mortality was exposure duration dependent i .e. mortality increased with the duration of exposure.
