Combining ability analysis was carried out in a diallel cross involving ten subtropical maize inbred lines for grain yield and important yield contributing characters. The expression of grain yield, days to silk and maturity, plant height, ear girth, number of kernel rows/ear and number of kernels/row was controlled by both additive and non-additive type of gene action. However, in the case of plant height, ear girth and number of kernels/row, additive genetic component was much greater than the non-additive genetic component, while for grain yield, and days to silk and maturity non-additive genetic component, while for grain yield, and days to silk and maturity non-additive gene effects played a greater role as compared to the additive gene effects in controlling these characters. The expression of ear height, ear length and 1000-kernel weight was controlled by additive type of gene action. Lml0l, Lmll0, and Lmll2 were found to be good general combiner inbreds for grain yield and other yield components. Based on per se performance and SCA effects, superior cross combinations Lml0l x Lml02 x Lml11 x Lml12 x Lml05 x Lml06 x Lml07 x Lml08 and Lml06 x Lml10 were identified as promising hybrids.

To identify subtropical superior parent inbred lines and their hybrid combinations for grain yield and its components based on combining ability in a 10 x 10 dialled cross of maize.

Ten subtropical maize inbred lines viz., Lml01, Lml02, Lml05, Lml06, Lml07 ,Lml08, Lml09, Lml10, Lml11 and Lml12 received from the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT), Mexico were crossed in a l0 x l0 diallel fashion excluding  reciprocals at the Regional Agricultural Research Station, BARI, Ishurdi, Pabna, Bangladesh during rabi season ( 2002-03). Crossing was done by hand pollination, Forty-five F1 hybrids obtained from diallel cross were evaluated at the Regional Agricultural Research Station, BARI, Ishurdi, Pabna, Bangladesh during rabi season (2003-04) following randomized complete block design with three replications. The unit plot size was 5.0 x 3.0 m maintaining a spacing of 75 x 75 cm (one plant/hill). Necessary intercultural operations were done as and when necessary for raising a good crop. Data on days to silk and maturity, plant and ear height in cm, ear length and girth in cm, number of kernel rows/ear, and number of kernels/row, l000 –kernel weight in g and grain yield/plot in kg were recorded. Days to silk, maturity and grain yield were recorded on per plot basis. However, average values of ten randomly selected competitive plants were considered for the remainders. Days to silk was recorded when 50% of the plants emerged silk. Days to maturity was recorded when the kernels attained physiologicaIn conclusion, inbred lines l maturity by observing the black layer formation. Grain yield was adjusted to l5 percent moisture and 85 percent shelling. Combining ability was analyzed following Griffing’s approach Model I (fixed effect) of Method 4. In this study, for days to silk and maturity, and plant and ear height, the inbred lines with significant and negative effects were considered as good general combiners, while for grain yield and other yield components those with significant and positive effects were considered as good general combiners.

In conclusion, inbred lines  Lml01, Lml10,  and Lml12 were found to bi useful for developing high yielding hybrids for gheir good general combining ability of grain yield and other yield components. Based on per se performance and SCA effects, the cross combinations Lml0l x Lml02 x Lml11 x Lml12 x Lml05 x Lml06 x Lml07 x Lml08 and Lml06 x Lml10 were found to be superior hybrids.
