Prevalence of Mastitis and Efficacy of Different Treatment Regimes on Clinical Mastitis in Cows

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This research was conducted to measure the prevalence of mastitis and efficacy of different treatment regimes of clinical mastitis in dairy cows at Potiya Upazila (Sub-district) of the Chittagong district of Bangladesh. For this purpose, California Mastitis Test (CMT) was performed for detecting the CMT positive quarters. Examination of udder and milk was performed to identify the clinical form of mastitis. It was observed that prevalence of both sub-clinical and clinical mastitis was 55% in the study area. Among 142 positive cases, 45% (n=117) were infected with mild mastitis, 7% (n=18) had moderate mastitis and 3% (n=7) were severely affected. Out of 262 milking cows from 16 randomly selected farms, 1048 quarters were screened for the presence of mastitis. The proportion of quarters affected with mastitis was 27% (n=283). The prevalence of mastitis in 3-4, 5-7 and 8-10 years old cows were 45, 56 and 67%, respectively. The occurrence of mastitis in the cows having parity 1^st, 2^nd, 3^rd-4^th and 5^th-7^th was 49, 58 and 66%, respectively. Prevalence of mastitis at 1-5, 6-10, 11-15 and 16-20 months of lactation (months after calving) were 45, 62, 58 and 55%, respectively. Lactation stage of 1-5 months varied significantly (p<0.05) with 6-10 months, with respect to the prevalence of mastitis. The percentage of mastitis was 68, 64, 49, 45 and 38% at milk yield of 1-5, 6-10, 11-15, 16-20 and 21-25 liters, respectively. Prevalence of mastitis was higher in the cows that yielded 1-5 and 6-10 litre milk than those yielding 16-20 litre (p<0.05). From 65 to 80% of the mastitis cows recovered when the drug choice and route of administration was rationally done on the basis of the severity of mastitis.

Methodology:

The study was conducted in the Department of Surgery and Obstetrics, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh July to December 2009. The field investigation was done at dairy farms of the Potiya Upazila (Sub-district) of the Chittagong district of Bangladesh. A total of 56 dairy farms were selected randomly for both investigations- prevalence study and treatment efficacy. These were contract farms of CDVS. In the first investigation, 262 lactating cows from 16 farms were used to determine the prevalence of both sub-clinical and clinical mastitis. In the second investigation, 80 clinical mastitis were selected among the cases reported by farmers of other 40 farms to study efficacy of treatments. The clinical cases (n=80) were categorized according to prevalence of mastitis (both sub-clinical and clinical) and treated accordingly. Each category contained 20 animals and 20 animals were kept as control. Other treatments were given according to recommended protocol of CDVA. The data collected were coded, scored, compiled, tabulated and analyzed by LSD (Least Square Difference) and Post Hoc Test using SPSS (Statistical Packages for Social Sciences) software. The percentage cure was compared between cases receiving different treatments in Microsoft Excel 2002.

Achievement/Findings:

The prevalence of mastitis was seen quite high in Potiya Upazila of Chittagong district. Farmers were unaware about sub-clinical mastitis and have had lack of knowledge on screening tests. So the farmer’s awareness should be created about sub-clinical mastitis and proper treatment strategies through extension services.
