Scope of Farmers' Participation Technology Testing in On-farm Research Division of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The purpose of the study was to determine Scope of farmers' participation technology testing in on-farm research division of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute. The design of the study was a descriptive survey research. Randomly selected samples of 120 farmers from three Farming Systems Research and Development sites at Tangail, Pabna, Rajshahi of BARI were selected for gathering essential information. Data were collected by interviewing the sample farmers, simple statistics like mean, number, percent range, SD etc were used, while correlation of coefficient and multiple regression analysis were administered to interpret the data. For technology testing 9 specific activities were identified. It has been found that the indices of 9 activities related to technology testing ranged from 35 to 98.89. based on indices, the top three activities of testing research were thought i) providing resources (98.89), ii) output utilization (88.33), iii) providing input (65.28). More than ninety six percent respondents had participation in technology testing activities from medium to low. Only 04 percent respondents were under high participation category. Educational qualification, annual income, innovativeness, training experiences, social connectedness, aspiration, media contact, knowledge and skill of the respondents had positive significant relationship with their participation in technology testing activities. Irrigation index had negative significant relationship with their participation. Education, farming experience, and self confidence had positive significant contribution and irrigation index had negative significant contribution in the situation. Self confidence had the maximum contribution in total variation of participation.

Objectives:

To solve the farm and farming related problems of farmers by developing appropriate technologies.

Methodology:

The design of the study was a descriptive survey research. Randomly selected samples of 120 farmers from three Farming Systems Research and Development sites at Tangail, Pabna, Rajshahi of BARI were selected for gathering essential information. Data were collected by interviewing the sample farmers, simple statistics like mean, number, percent range, SD etc were used, while correlation of coefficient and multiple regression analysis were administered to interpret the data. For technology testing 9 specific activities were identified. The following null hypothesis was formulated to give proper direction to study and to test the relationship between selected characteristics of the respondents and extent participation of the farmer’s in agricultural research. “there is no relationship between the selected characteristics of the farmers and of their extent of participation in on farm research. Descriptive statistics such as number and percentage distribution, mean, SD were used for presentation of data in the farm. To test the hypothesis some interferential statistics such as correlation, multiple and stepwise regression were used. Correlation analysis was used to measure the association between dependent and independent variable. Multiple regression models were used to identify potentially significant independent variables and to determine the predictive power of the change in dependent variable in response to change in independent variables.

Achievement/Findings:

More than half (59%) of the respondents had low participation compared to 37% medium and 4% high in technology testing activities. Educational qualification, annual income, innovative ness, training experiences, social connectedness, aspiration, media contact, knowledge and skill of the respondents had positive and significant effect on their participation in technology testing, while irrigation index had negative and significant effect. Thus, it can be said that the higher is the Educational qualification, annual income, innovativeness, training experiences, social connectedness, aspiration, media contact, knowledge and self-confidence, the greater is the participation in technology testing. But for irrigation index higher is the irrigation index lower is the participation of the respondents. Self confidence is the most important contributing characteristic to the respondents.
