Effect of Different Time and Depth of Usg Application on the Growth and Yield of Cauliflower

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at the Farming Systems Research and Development (FSRD) site, Palima, Tangail during 2003-04 and 2004-05 to evaluate the effect of time and depth of Urea Super Granule (USG) placement on the performance of cauliflower (Brassica oleracea). The treatments were: 3 levels of depth of placement (4, 8 and 12 cm) and 4 levels of USG application at 0, 10, 15 & 20 days after transplanting. The effect of time of USG placement and depth of application on yield and yield contributing characters of cauliflower was found significant in both the years. On an average, the result showed that the higher curd yield (38.85 t/ha) was obtained from the combination of placement of USG at 8 cm depth and 10 days after transplanting. Similar trend was observed for individual curd weight which resulted highest yield from this treatment. Combined effect of USG placement at 8 cm depth and its time of application at 10 days after transplanting gave higher yield and benefit (2.83) compared to other treatments.

Objectives:

To find out the optimum time and depth of placement of USG and to increase N use efficiency and profitability of the farmers.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the FSRD site, Palima, Tangail during 2003-2004 and 2004-05 two consecutive years in the medium highland under AEZ-8. The experiment was conducted in split plot design with 6 dispersed replications. Treatments were three depth of placement (D₁ = 04 cm, D₂ = 08 cm & D₃ = 12 cm) in main plot and four time of application (T₁= 0, T₂= 10, T₃=15 & T₄= 20 Days After Transplanting (DAT)) in sub plot. The unit plot size was 4 m x 5 m and spacing 60 cm x 45 cm was maintained. The hybrid variety Milk-way was used in the trial. The cauliflower seedlings were transplanted on last week of October and crop was harvested on 2nd week of January in both the years. Twice weeding and irrigation were done in a cropping season. The soil of the experimental area was sandy clay loam with pH 5.9. The soil content 1.75% organic matter, total nitrogen content 0.06%, available P 5.22 µg/g, exchangeable K 0.12 meq/l00g, available S 14.00 µg/g, B 0.19 µg/g and available Zn 8.0 µg/g. The values showed that N and P content were very low whereas K, S and B were low and Zn content were very high. The average of four months (October to January) maximum temperature were 27.30°C and 27.71°C and minimum temperature were 17.00°C and 16.47°C and total rainfall were 81 mm and 18 mm, respectively in years 2003-04 and 2004-05. Fertilizers nutrients NPKS were applied @97-50-80-10 kg/ha on the basis of soil analysis value as per recommendation during the final land preparation except USG. Cowdung @3 t/ha was used in the trial. Eight balls of USG (0.9 g) by weight per plant was applied at 0, 10, 15 and 20 DAT as ring method and 8 cm apart from plant stalk in designed depth. The data on different plant characters and yield components were collected from the sample of 10 plants selected at random in each plot and yield was recorded plot wise and analyzed statistically following the procedure stated in Gomez and Gomez.

Achievement/Findings:

The result showed that cauliflower could be grown with USG in 4 to 8 cm depth and applying USG 10 days after transplant in Tangail region.
