Status of Biosecurity in Broiler Farms of Mymensingh Sadar Upazilla

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted to investigate the status of biosecurity practices by the broiler farmers of Mymensingh Sadar Upazilla and to explore the relationships of selected characteristics of farmer with biosecurity status of their farm. Data were collected from 40 randomly selected broiler farmers by objective oriented questionnaire. Majority of the farmers had medium family, secondary education, medium flock size and no training on farm management. Highest portion of the farmers always locked entrance door, changed disinfectant in 2 days or more in foot bath, used foot wear, buried dead bird, sold litter after removal, burnt chick box, treated litter for some time, reared single aged broiler and never allowed unauthorized visitors. Flock profiling and water treatment were not practiced by most of farmers. Most of the farm had poor rodent, vermin and fly control facilities and poor to fair neatness of work rooms, service area and surrounding houses. Majority of the farm had less than 50 feet distance to access road and highway, employed farm labour for more than 1.5 years and given an interval of one to two weeks between successive batches. Biosecurity status index (BSI) was developed to measure each of the 21 aspects of management practices. The BSi ranged from 54 to 167 against the possible range of 32 to 220. The score of the index was considered as proportional to the risk of infection or worst biosecurity status. On the basis of BSI, most of the farm had medium to high risk of infection. Statistical analysis showed that farmer’s education, farm size, farm management, concept on biosecurity had negative relationships (p<0.01) with their status of adhering to biosecurity practices. The present status of biosecurity is not satisfactory for prevention of diseases. Therefore, collective and coordinated efforts should be taken to further develop and improve the existing management practices for the better interest of this sector.

Objectives:

2. To explore the relationships between selected characteristics of farmer and their strength of biosecurity.

Methodology:

The study was conducted in rural areas in four unions (Char Nilakhmia, Bhabkhali, Boyra and Sutiakhali) of Mymensingh Sadar Upazilla located about 2-3 km South West and South East from the Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh (BAU) Campus. The villages were well communicated from BAU campus. Ten broiler farms were selected at random from each union i.e. total 40 broiler farms were identified as study unit. Two types of variables, independent and dependent were selected. The independent variables were age, education, family size, annual income, farm size, training status on farm management and concept on biosecurity of farm owners. General biosecurity practice was considered as dependent variable comprising 21 aspects of biosecurity practices. Biosecurity status index (BSI) was developed to measure each of the 21 aspects of management practices. The qualitative data were transferred into quantitative data by appropriate scoring techniques as recommended by Dekich (1995). The analysis was performed by using SPSS (Statistical Packages for Social Sciences) computer package. Descriptive analysis such as range, number and percentage, mean, standard deviation and rank order were done to find out the differences between selected variables of the farmers in this area. The correlation between independent and dependent variables were carried out to find the relationship and to measure the strength (Gomez & Gomez, 1984).

Achievement/Findings:

The findings indicated that the status of biosecurity of broiler farms in Mymensingh Sadar Upazilla was not up to the mark for prevention and control of diseases. Collective and coordinated efforts should be taken to further develop and improve the existing management practices for the better interest of this sector and also explore the opportunities open to enter the export market.
