Seed Production Technique in Brassica

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Open pollination produced the highest number of pods per plant (766.33). Number of seeds per pod significantly higher in artificial self pollination than other pollination methods. Seed yield per plant was the maximum in artificial self pollination (32.44 g) followed by honey bee pollination (27.75 g). Seed yield per plot and per hectare followed almost the same trend of seed yield per plant. The lowest values of all the parameters were recorded in the control. Bangla cabbage produced the highest 1000 seed weight (4.60 g). The highest number of pods per plant (874.42) and number of seeds per pod (34.29) were obtained in Bangla kale. Seed yield per plot was recorded the highest (822.50 g) in Bangla kale and per hectare yield was the highest in the same variety/genotype (1904.06 kg/ha). Bangla cabbage with honey bee pollination produced the maximum seed yield per hectare (2509.25). On the other hand, Bangla Kale with artificial self pollination produced the highest seed yield (3103.14 kg/ha).

To compare seed production ability of newly bred Brassica green with other Brassica.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at the experimental farm of Institute of Post Graduate Studies in Agriculture (IPSA), Salna, Gazipur during the period from October, 1996 to May, 1997. Bangia cabbage (IPSA cabbage-1). Bangla kale (IPSA kale-1) and Probhati were included. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design with 15 treatments having 3 replications. Fifty days old seedling were transplanted on 12th October in 1996. Open pollination (T1) : In this treatment , all natural pollinating agents like honey bee, gravitational force , wind and other insects were allowed in pollination. Honey bee pollination in cage (T2) Artificial self-pollination (T3) Bud pollination (T4) Emasculation and self pollination Bud pllination Control (T5) : In this treatment , the plot was covered with mosquito net cage having no door.The following data were recorded such as :Number of pods per plant,Pod length (cm), Number of seeds per pod, Seed yield per plant (g),1000 seed weight (g), Seed yield per plot (g), Seed yield per kg), Seed germination (%)

Achievement/Findings:

Bangia kale produced the highest number of pods (874.42) per plant and the lowest (180.40) in Probhat1 (Table 2) . Bangia cabbage produced the intermediate pods (811.31) per plant. Uddin (1992) obtained pods per plant ranging from 570 53 to 953.08 in interspecific hybnds of Brassica. Bangia cabbage showed the highest length (4.76cm) which was closely followed by Probhati (4 74) Though, the pod length of Bangia kale (4 07cm) significantly differed from the other two varieties/genotypes. Bangia kale produced the highest number of seed per pod (8.37) while it was the lowest in Probhati Combined effect of varieties/genotypes and different methods of pollination on the number of pods produced per plant which varied from as low as 150.00 in case of Probhati under open pollinated condition to as high as 1216.73 in Bangia kale in the methods of pollination. Bangia kale also produced the second highest number of pods per plant when plants were artificially pollinated (116.67).The two Brassica genotypes have the ability to produce abundant seeds much more than Probhati. The result of the study revealed that for higher seed yield honey bee as pollinating agent may be practiced in Bangia cabbage and artificial self pollinating in Bangia kale.
