In acid soil of Dinajpur, 4 levels of lime (0, 1, 2 and 3 ton/ha) and 5 levels of P (0, 40, 60, 80 and 100 kg P205/ha from TSP) were tested on soli pH, phosphorus (P) availability and yield of wheat. Application of lime Increased the pH of the soil at crown root Initiation (CRI) stage of the crop and that Increment In pH was nearly stable up to the harvest of the crop. Available P In the surface and sub-surface soil was significantly increased by both liming and application of P. The amelioration effect of acid soil following lime and P application increased significantly the grain yield of wheat, which was associated with increased In number of grain/spike and 1000 grain weight of wheat. Without liming the yield increase In wheat was linear due to applied phosphorus from 0 to 100 kg P205/ha but when lime was applied at the rate 2 t/ha, higher yield was obtained with application of 80 kg style="margin-left:6.45pt;" P205/ha

To find out the optimum rates of lime and phosphorus for maximum yield of wheat and     ii) study the availability of P and change in soil pH due to application of lime and P.

The experiment was initiated in 1995-96 wheat season at the research field of Wheat Research Centre, Diajpur. There were 4 levels of lime 0, 1, 2, 3 ton/ha and 100  kg/ha  from TSP. Nitrogen, potassium and sulphur were applied from urea, muriate of potash and gypsum at the rate of 100, 40 and 20 kg/ha respectively. All fertilizer including two-third urea. were applied at final land preparation and the  rest one-third urea was top dressed at CRI stage. Different   levels of  lime and  P fertilizer were arranged in  4X5 factorial   RCB  design  with  three replication  having unit plot size of 5m X  4m.  Liming was  done with commonly used liming   material calcite  (CaC03)  dust.  Mixing  and incorporation of lime into the soil in individual plots were done by spading.   The  experimental  soil was acidic having average value of pH 5.1 at the surface (0-10 em) 5.5 at the subsurface (15-30 em). The soil was sandy-loam in texture and  very  poor  in  organic  matter having  organic  carbon  0.18% the surface   and  0.09%  in  the  sub surface respectively. Exchangeable   Ca,   Mg  contents were   2.7,  0.6  meq/100g  at  the surface and 3.3, 0.9 meq/100g at the sub-surface. Available P of initial soil was 13 and 12 j.Jg/ml at the surface and sub-surface respectively. The collected data were analyzed statistically as factorial RCB design and the means were separated by Least Significant Difference (LSD) test at 5% level of significance.

Liming increased the soil pH both at surface (0-15 em) and  sub surface (15-30 em) as determined at CRI stage and after harvest of wheat. Soil pH was raised from 5.2 to 6.5 in surface and from 5.4 to 6.4 in sub-surface at CRI stage of the crop due to application of lime. Both at CRt stage and after harvest of  the  crop,  available  P  of  soil tended to increase   with each increment of lime and applied  P levels.  Due to liming, the maximum average  value  of available P was recorded from L3 at  different  depths  of  soil  and stages  of the crop which were statistically  similar  to L2 but different from LO and L1. At the same level of PO grain yield of wheat increased by 33.3 % (from 2841 to 3788 kg/ha) due to application of lime at the rate of 3 t/ha but the increment was 12.8 % with the same amount of lime under P4. Again, under no liming grain yield of wheat was increased. by 39.8 % (from 2841 kg/ha in PO and 3971 kg/ha in P4) due to application  of  P205 at the  rate of align="center" style="margin-left:8.35pt;"> 100  kg/ha  but the  increment  was about  18.3   %   with the same amount  of  P205 under L3. Application  of lime in the absence of applied P and application of P in the  absence  of  lime  exhibited  a greater  response  as compared  to application  of  both at higher  rate. However,  the  highest  grain  yield (4591  kg/ha)  was  obtained  from L3P3, which was similar to the that obtained from liming at the rate of 2 t/ha  coupled  with  P205  60  kg/ha (4568 kg/ha). From the above results and information it may be concluded that liming at the rate of 2 t/ha coupled with 60 kg P205/ha improved both yield and chemical properties (pH, available P) of acid soil
