Effects of N, P and K on the Growth, Yield and Profitability of Jack Bean (canavalia Ensiformis L. Dc) in the Hilly Region

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment comprising eleven combination s of N (0, 25, 50, 75, and I 00 kg/ha), P (0, SO, I00 and 150 kg/ha) and K (0, 50, I 00 and 150 kg/ha) with a blanket dose of cowdung (I0 t/ha) was conducted in RCB design with three replications at ARS, Raikhali, Rangamati in two consecutive cropping seasons of 2003-04 and 2004-05 to study the yield performance s of Jack bean and to determine the optim um fertilizer requirement. N, P and K significantly increased branching, number of pods, weight of pods/plant, fresh pod yield, gross return and benefit cost ratio. Application of N , P and K @ 50, 200 and 100 kg/ha, respectively, produced the maximum number of pods/plant (37.38) and maximum pod yield (23.86tlha). The lowest number of pod and yield (16.92 pods/plant , 11.34 t/ha) was obtained from control. The highest gross margin of Tk .1,90,880/ha, net return (Tk. 1 ,48,660/ha) and benefit cost ratio (4.52) were obtained from the application of N, P, and K @ 50, 200 and 100 kg/h a, respectively. The calculated optimum dose of N , P and K dose for maximum yield and profitability was 78,2 1 2 and II0 & 75, 185 and 89 kg/ha, respectively.

Objectives:

To study the growth and yield performances of Jack bean under different fertilizer levels and the optimum level of N, P and K fertilizer to maximize and profitability.

Methodology:

The study was conducted at the Agricultural Research Station, Raikhali, Rangamati in two consecutive cropping seasons during September 2003 to March, 2005. The experimental field belongs to AEZ 29 and the soil was sandy clay loam with pi I 5.4. The experiment was laid out in a RCB design with three replications. The bed size was 6x I m (two beds consisted one un it plot). Eleven combination of treatment s consisting N (0, 25, 50, 75 and I 00 kg/h a), P (0, 50, I 00 and 150 kg/ha) and K (0, 50, I 00 an d 150 kg/ha) with a blanket dose of well decomposed cowdung @ I 0 t/ha.

Achievement/Findings:

From the two years results, May 2004 , planting hm.cd overall better performance than September 2003 planting in the hilly areas. The better yield performance in May 2004 planting is due to sufficient rainfall that provided adequate moisture enhanced the vegetative growth and yield in the hilly areas. In Rabi season, extreme dry condition lowered the number of pods and pod size that reduced the yield performance of Jack bean in the hilly areas. The effects of N, P and K were distinct in most of the yield and yield contributing characters of Jack bean.
