An experiment was carried out at the Regional Agricultural  Research Station, Rahmatpur, Barisal during the Rabi season of 1997-98 to find out the  suitable  age  of  seedling  and  optimum  time  of  transplanting  for maximizing yield and profitability of onion cv. Taherpuri in the southern region of Bangladesh. It was observed that the age of seedling and time of transplanting had pronounced effect on bulb yield of onion. The highest yield  of  bulb  (11.65  t/ha)  was  produced  by  60  days  old  seedlings . Transplanting of onion seedling on November 30 gave the highest (10.85 t/ha) which was statistically similar with transplanting on 10 December (10.66 t/ha). Transplanting on 20 December gave the worst yield (8.75 t/ha). Seedling age and transplanting time interacted significantly for all the characters studied. The highest yield (13.20 t/ha) was recorded from 60 days old seedlings transplanted on 30 November. Similar yield (12.93 t/ha) was obtained by transplanting 60 days seedlings transplanted on 10 December. Total variable cost was higher for production of onion form 70 days old seedlings (Tk. 41595.00/ha) due to higher cost of seedlings (Tk. 15341.00/ha). Other costs were equal for all the treatments. Considering Benefit Cost Ratio (BCR), the highest value (2.98) was obtained from 60 days old seedlings followed by 50 days old seedlings (2.93). Whereas 70 days old seedlings gave the lowest BCR value (1.88).

To find out the optimum age of seedlings and time of transplanting for onion production .

The  study  was  conducted  at  the Regional Agricultural Research Station, Rahmatpur, Barisal during the period form November, 1996 to April 1997.  Seedlings of a local onion cultivar, Taherpuri, which  is  very  popular  due  to  its pungency  and  prolonged  keeping quality, were  used as  the  planting materials.  Four ages  of  seedlings (40, 50, 60 and 70 days) with four dates  of transplanting  (November, 20; November, 30;  December,  10 and  December, 20) were  included in the  study. The  experiment  was laid out in a Factorial RCB Design with three replications . The size of the unit plot was 2.0 m   1.5 m. The seedlings  were  transplanted  at  a spacing of 20 em 10 em thereby accommodating 150 plants in each plot. Manure and fertilizers were applied at the rate of 5 t/ha Cowdung, 260 kg/ha Urea, 130 kg/ha TSP and 160 kg/ha MP. Data on plant height, number of leaves per plant, diameter and weight of bulb and yield were recorded. The economic return from onion cultivation was calculated on the basis of average market price of different items including labour cost and inputs. The collected data were analyzed statistically by F-test and the significance of the differences between the treatment means were examined by DMRT

Plant grown form 60 and 50 days old seedlings produced the tallest plants of 34.73 and 34.21 cm, respectively. Plants of these age groups were superior in   height to those produced form 40 and 70 days old seedlings. The transplanting dates of 30 November and 10 December produced plants of similar heights, 35.15 and 34.64 em, respectively and were taller than those transplanted  on 20  November or 20 December. This indicates with in the scope of the experiment that onion plants of biggest size would be produced if transplanting done between 30 November and 10 December. Plants of larger height were produced by 60 days old seedlings when they were transplanted on 30 November (39.57 cm). Whatever the date of transplanting was the seedlings of all ages produced significantly shorter plants than those grown form 60 days old seedlings transplanted on 30 November. The  maximum  number of leaves (12.59) per plant was produced by the plants grown form 60 days old seedlings followed by those grown form 50 days old seedlings (12.14), while 70 days old seedlings produced the minimum number of leaves per plant (9.48). Plants  grown form 60 days old seedlings produced the largest sized bulb (11.26 cm) than the plants grown form 50, 40 and 70 days old seedlings (10.37 cm, 9.43 cm and 8.52 cm respectively) . Maximum diameter of bulb (10.45 cm) was recorded form the plants transplanted on 30 November, which was statistically similar with December 10 planing (10.23 cm). The lowest diameter of bulb was obtained form  the plants transplanted on 20   December (8.84 cm) " The present investigation indicates that the best transplanting time of onion seedlings at the Southern Region of Bangladesh is between November 30 and December 10. During this period 50 or 60 days old seedlings should be  transplanted to get the highest onion yield per unit area  with biggest onion size, and thereby to obtain maximum benefit.
