Heterosis for Yield and Yield Contributing Traits in Aromatic Rice (oryza Sativa L.)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Heterosis for yield and seven yield components, viz. plant height (cm), panic le number per plant (no.), panicle length (cm), grain length (mm ), grain width (mm), fertile spikelet per plant (no.) and 1000-grain weight (g) was assessed in twenty crosses derived from nine varieties of aromatic rice at the experimental farm of the Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Gazipur. In general, the hybrids performed significantly better than the respective parents. Both positive and negative heterosis over mid parent and better parent were observed for all the characters under test. In comparison of F1 hybrids with their respective mid parent and better parent showed significant heterosis for most of the characters except for grain width (mm). Among the 20 hybrids two cross combinations viz:.Uknimadhu x Kataribhog and Uknimadhu x Badshahbhog exhibited the highest estimates of both mid and better parent heterosis for grain yield/hill (g) followed by Ukn imadhu x Rajbhog.

Objectives:

To increase the yield potentiality of aromatic rice since good number of traditional aromatic rice germplasms with appreciable grain quality and taste are available in Bangladesh .

Methodology:

The experimental materials consist of nine diverse genotypes of rice viz. Kalizira, Basmati, BRS, Ukni madhu, Jirabhog, Chinishakkar, Badsh abhog, Kataribhog, Rajbhog and their twenty F 1s progeny. The parents along with twenty F1 hybrid s were grown during the period from August 2007 to December 2007 in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with 3 replications at the experimental field of the Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding. Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Gazipur.After raising seedlings in seed bed they were transplanted in the main field in two rows of 3m length with 20cm x 20cm spacing. Standard agronomic practices were followed to raise a good crop. Ten randomly selected plants were used from each replication for data collection. Data were collected on eight yield contributing characters viz. plant height (cm), number of panicles/hill, panicle length (cm), Grain length (mm), Grain width (m m), number of fertile spikelets/plant, I 00-seed weight (g) and Yield/hill (g).

Achievement/Findings:

The highest magnitude of hetcrosis over mid parent as well as over better parent for gain yield per hill (g) was exhibited by the hybrid Uknimodhu x Kataribhog followed by the cross com bination Uknirnadhu x Badshah bhog. Therefore, these two crosses can be used as the better cross com bi nation for showing highest significant mid and better parent hcterosis.
