Prevalence of Reproductive Disorders of Crossbred Cows in the Rajshahi District of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The incidence of reproductive disorders (RD) of dairy cows in relation to breed, age, parity, body weight and body condition of 500 dairy cows belonging to F (Friesian) × L (Local; n=342), SL (Sahiwal) × L; n=91), SL×F×L; n=67) from 10 different Upazilas (Sub-District) of the Rajshahi District were studied during January to December, 2007. The data were collected directly from the dairy cowowners by using questionnaires and diagnosis of RD was made on the basis of the history, clinical signs, and response to treatment. The incidence of stillbirth, retained placenta, dystocia and repeat breeding were highest in SL×F×L cows and lowest in F×L cows. Breed of the cows had significant effect only on silentheat (P<0.05) while age had significant effect on the incidence of stillbirth (P<0.05), metritis (P<0.05),Ovaries with non-significant structure (NSS) (P<0.05) and anoestrus (P<0.05). The incidence of abortion, metritis, cysticovary, vaginal prolapse, uterine prolapse, retained placenta, dystocia,anoestrus and repeat breeding were higher in >8 years old cows and lower in <4 and 4-6 years aged cows. Incidence of stillbirth, retained placenta and dystocia were higher (P<0.05) in >6th parity cows than 3rd parity cows. Stillbirth, silent heat and Ovaries with NSS had significantly higher incidence in poor body condition cows compared to the fair and very good body conditions. The results suggest that F×L crossbred, <6 years of age, 3rd parity and fair body condition had lower incidence of RD in dairy cows.

Objectives:

To measures the incidence of reproductive disorders (RD) in different Upazila of the Rajshahi district, Bangladesh in relation to breed, age, parity and body condition score (BCS) of cows.

Methodology:

The incidence of reproductive disorders (RD) of dairy cows in relation to breed, age, parity and body condition of 500 dairy cows belonging to F (Friesian) × L (Local; n=342), SL (Sahiwal) × L; n=91), SL×F × L; n=67) from 10 different Upazilas (Sub-Districts) of the Rajshahi district were studied from January to December 2007. There were 50 cows in each Upazila of Boyalia, Paba, Puthia, Durgapur, Bagmara, Bagha, Charghat, Godagari, Tanor and Mohonpur. Age of cows was divided into 4 groups: <4 years, 4 to < 6 years, 6 to < 8 years and >8 years. The raw data were sorted, computed and statistically analysed the average mean, total number and percentage of diseases and ANOVA using SPSS program.

Achievement/Findings:

Anoestrus and repeat breeding of crossbred cows had the highest prevalence (20.4% and 20.2%, respectively) among the reproductive disorders studied. The highest incidence of reproductive disorders was in Bagmara Upazila (16%) and lowest in Charghat and Tanor (5%) Upazila. Lowest percentage of reproductive disorders was in Friesian×Local crossbred, <4 years age group, parity-3 group, and in good condition score cows. This study has observed some of the risk factors responsible for the prevalence of various disorders.
