Environmental Effect on Tomato Yellow Leaf Curl Virus and Whitefly Population in Tomato Varieties Under Field Condition

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of temperature and relative humidity on Tomato yellow leaf curl virus and whitelly population in sixteen tomato varieties in Gazipur, during 2009-20 10. The experiment was laid out in randomize complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. The tomato varieties namely Abhiruchi-06. Abhiruchi- 10, Abhiruchi- 1 1. Bankim, Chuanchu, Winner, Gautam, Mongal, BARI Tomato-3, BARITomato-2, BARI Tomato-9, Raksha, Salamat, Tropic green, Udayan and Diamond were used. Whitefly population was trapped by placing yellow traps in the field during the season.Whitelly population (27.45-49.55) fluctuated with the fluctuation of temperature (I9.03°C -28.69°C) and relative humidity (73.35% - 87.90%). Temperature was significantly correlated and had pronounced effect on whitelly population compared to relative humidity. Field spread of the disease was found positive and significantly correlated (R2 = 0.728) with whitefly population build up in the field. Percent disease incidence varied from 16 to 29'/f- while the highest incidence was found on Mongol (29'«) and the lowest was in Salama! (IS'h ). The hybrid Salama! performed better against the prevailing environmental conditions.

Objectives:

To find out resistant tomato varieties as a tool of successful control strategies.

Methodology:

The field experiment was conducted at the Research and Development farm of Energy Pac Agro. Limited, Gazipur during October 2009 to March 2010 with sixteen tomato variety. The varieties were Abhiruchi -06, Abhiruchi- 10, Abhiruchi-1 Bankim, Chuanchu, Winner, Gautam , Mongal , BARI Tomato- 3, Raksha, BARI Tomato- 2, BARI Tomato- 9, Salamat, Tropic green, Udayan and Diamond. Tomato seedlings were raised in a well-drained open nursery bed. The recommended dose of compost and fertilizers were mixed properly with the soil of the nursery bed before sowing. The seedlings of each variety were transplanted i n plots (3 m x 2 m) with plot to plot distance of 0.5 m and block to block distance of 1 .0 m. The seedlings were grown in a single row where row to row distance was 70 cm and plant to plant distance was 50 cm. The design was RCBD having three replications. The Tomato Yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV) was i dentified based on field symptoms as described by Akanda (1991 ), A lam ( 1995) and Gupta (2000). The disease incidence was recorded regularly throughout the growing season to last harvest.

Achievement/Findings:

study revealed that the presence of increased number of whitefly is responsible for the increase of TYLCV infected plants in the tomato field with few exceptions. Temperature and relative humidity left a considerable effect on TYLCV and whitefly population. In case of temperature the number of whitefly population and percent disease infected plants varied significantly. The percent disease incidence was highly positively correlated with the whitefly population. The hybrid Salamat (15%), Abhiruchi- 10 (16%), Abhiruchi -6 ( 17%) and BARI Tomato-2 (17%) were less infected while Gautam (25%), Topic green (26%) and Mongal (29%) were highly infected tomato varieties in the prevailing environmental conditions.
