Field trials on hybrid maize (cv. BARI hybrid bhutta-5) was conducted in the farmers’ field that represents the Non-Calcareous Floodplain Soils under Tista Meander Floodplain (AEZ- 3) at Hatibandha, Lalmonirhat and Patgram during the rabi season of 2006-2008. The objectives were to find out the response of lime and boron on maize yield and to find out the optimum level of B for hybrid maize production. At Lalmonirhat, the experiment was conducted in three consecutive years (2006-2007, 2007-2008 and 2008-2009) to see the residual effect of lime (applied in previous year) along with applied boron. The experiments were also conducted during 2006-2007 at Hatibandha and 2007-2008 and 2008-2009 at Patgram. Treatments comprising four levels of boron (0, 1, 2 and 3 kg ha-1 from boric acid) and 2 levels of lime (0 and 2 t ha-1 from dolomite) along with a blanket dose of N300P50K125S40Zn2 kg ha-1 and cowdung 5 t ha-1 were used but no lime was used at Lalmonirhat during 2007-2008 and Patgram during 2008-2009 to see the residual effect of lime. Lime played major role in augmenting the yield of maize. Maize was also found responsive to both boron and lime in the study areas. Soil of Rangpur region should be amended with lime @ 2 t ha-1 at least one month before cultivation. Boron @ 2.0 kg ha-1 along with the said dose of lime and a blanket dose of N300P50K125S40Zn2 kg ha-1 and cowdung 5 t ha-1 appeared to be the best-suited dose which may be recommended for maximizing the yield of hybrid maize at Hatibandha, Patgram and Lalmonirhat, respectively in the greater Rangpur region (AEZ-3).

a. To find out the effect of lime and boron on hybrid maize production. b. To find out the optimum and economic dose of boron for hybrid maize.

Two experiments were conducted in a farmers’ field that represents the Non Calcareous Floodplain Soils under Tista Meander Floodplain (AEZ- 3) at Lalmonirhat and Hatibandha during the rabi season during 2006-2007 and at Lalmonirhat and Patgram during 2007-2008 and 2008-2009. The tested crop was hybrid maize (cv. BARI hybrid bhutta-5). The initial soil samples at a depth of 0-15 cm from the experimental fields were collected and analyzed following standard methods. There were 8 treatment combinations comprising 4 levels of B (0, 1, 2 and 3 kg ha-1) and 2 levels of lime (0 and 2 t ha-1) during 2006-2007. During 2007-2008, sixteen treatment combinatios were used at Patgram according to the opinion of the expert members where 4 levels of B (0, 1, 2 and 3 kg ha-1) and 4 levels of lime (0, 1, 2 and 3 t ha-1) comprised the treatments. During 2008-2009 as farmers refused with sixteen treatments, eight treatments were used for Patgram. Besides, a blanket dose of N300P50K125S40Zn2 kg ha-1 and cowdung 5 t ha-1 was used for each of the locations under study. The experiments were laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The unit plot size was 4 m X 5 m. Seeds were sown with a spacing of row to row 75 cm and seed to seed 25 cm and the seed rate was 25 kg ha-1. The seeds were sown at Hatibandha on 9th December and that of at Lalmonirhat on 15th December, 2006. During 2007-2008, 9th and 15th December and 2008-2009, 23rd and 11th December seeds were sown in Patgram and Lalmonirhat, respectively. Urea, TSP, MP, Gypsum, Zinc oxide and Boric acid were used as the source of N, P, K, S, Zn and B, respectively. All P, K, S, Zn, B and cowdung and 1/3rd N were applied at the time of final land preparation and the remaining 2/3rd N was applied in two equal installments each at 30 and 60 days after sowing. Lime (Dolomite) was applied 1 month before final land preparation during 2006-2007 at Hatibandha and Lalmonirhat and during 2007-2008 at Patgram. No lime was applied in the following year of lime application. Irrigation, insect, pest control and other intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. Data on yield and yield contributing characters at harvest were recorded and analyzed statistically following MSTAT package while the mean separation was done by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test. Post harvest soil and plant samples were also collected at harvest for analysis.
