Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Studies on twenty four guava genotypes revealed that the number of flowers per plant, harvested fruits per plant, weight of single fruit, number of seeds per fruit and weight of seeds per fruit had a high degree of positive association with fruit yield at genotypic and phenotypic levels. Path coefficient analysis indicated that the number of flowers per plant, harvested fruits per plant and weight of fruit contributed maximum direct effect on yield of guava, indicating their importance as selection parameters.

Objectives:

To determine the nature of association and the direct and indirect contribution of component traits towards yield in guava.

Methodology:

Twenty four indigenous and exotic genotypes/varieties of guava which were collected and established at Germplasm Centre, Fruit Tree Improvement Project, Department of Horticulture, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh were chosen for this study. The study period was from January 2000 to September 2002. The experiment was conducted on 7 years old plants. The experiment was laid out in a randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. Three plants of each genotype constituted three replications. Irrigation along with other intercultural operations were done as per recommendation and essentiality. The mean value of two years findings was used for this study. Association of different characters under the study was analysed by working out the genotypic and phenotypic degree of correlation and simple correlation co-efficient for all the possible pairs of character combination by the method. The direct and indirect effect of each contributing characters towards yield at genotypic level was done following Dewey and Lu.

Achievement/Findings:

It may be concluded that single fruit weight had the highest positive direct effect on fruit yield followed by harvested fruits per plant and flowers per plant. It appeared that fruit weight and harvested fruits per plant were major component traits for fruit yield in guava.
