Effect of Azolla Pinnata and Bradyrhizobium on Root-knot of Soybean

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Two bio-fertilizers named Azolla pinnata and Bradyrhizobium were tested against root-knot nematode (Meloidogyne incognita) of soybean under pothouse condition. They were used in five different combinations viz. green Azolla alone, dry Azolla alone, Bradyrhizobium alone, green Azolla+Bradyrhitobium and dry Azolla+ Bradyrhizobium. All treatments increased plant growth, pod number, grain yield and decreased number of root gall and populations of nematodes under different developmental stages as compared to control. The efficacy of dry Azolla alone was better than green Azolla alone as well as Bradyrhizobium alone. The best treatment was dry Azolla + Bradyrhirobium.

Objectives:

To find out the effect of two bio-fertilizers Azolla pinnata and Bradyrhizobium on root-knot of Soybean.

Methodology:

Two bio-fertilizers namely Azolla pinnata and Bradyrhizobium (strains BINA SB 102, BINA SB 111. BINA SB 1906 and BINA SB 3407) were tested against root-knot nematode (M. incognita) of soybean in a pot experiment. Apparently healthy seeds of soybean and the bio-fertilizers were obtained from Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA), Mymensingh. Freshly collected inocula of the bio-fertilizers were used. Six different treatments viz. control, green Azolla alone, dry Azolla alone, Bradyrhirobium alone, green Azolla+ Bradyrhiuzobium and dry Azolla + Bradyrhizobium were maintained in the experiment. Bradyrhizobium was mixed with the seeds before sowing and Azolla was applied to the soil after germination.

Achievement/Findings:

Comparatively, higher effect of green Azolla with Bradyrhizobium was also observed with plant growth characters, nodulation, pod and yields. Dry Azolla in combination with Bradyrhizobium showed the best performance among the treatments.
