Genetic Variability, Character Association and Path Analysis in Restorer Lines of Hybrid Rice (oryza Sativa L)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Twenty restorer lines of hybrid rice were evaluated in order to find out genetic variability, correlation and path coefficient for floral and yield related traits at the experimental farm of Bangladesh Rice Research Institute, Gazipur during July to December 2008. High heritability coupled with high genetic advance and genetic advance in percentage of mean were observed for flag leaf area, number of tillers per hill. number of' panicles per hill, spikelet sterility percent, 1000 seed weight and grain yield per hill except days LO 50% flowering, days to maturity, plant height with moderate genetic advance in percentage of mean. Significant variations were observed am ong th e genotypes in twelve selected characters studied. Minimum difference between genotypic and phenotypic variance, high to moderate heritability and low to high genetic advance and genetic advance in percent of mean were observed for all the traits studied. Days to maturity, flag leaf area, number of tillers per hill, number of filled spikelets per panicle and 1000 seed weight showed high degree of significant correlation with grain yield per hill.

Objectives:

Studying the yield, its contributing characteristics of restorer lines to find out superior lines for commercial hybrid seed production

Methodology:

Twenty restorer lines were grown in a randomized complete block design with three replications at the experimental farm, BRRI, Gazipur during July to December 2008. During the experimentation the rainfall occurred at least 200 mm/month from July to October. The growth is characterized by high rainfall, cloudy sky to clear sunshine, low temperature at the later part and moderate to high temperature in the earlier part. The whole experimental area was divided into three blocks, representing three replications. Three rows constituted of each experimental unit (2m²). Adequate soil fertility was ensured by applying additional quantities of Urea- TSP-MP- Gypsum- ZnS0₄ @ 150:100:70:60:10 kg/ha, respectively. Total TSP, MP.Gypsum and ZnS0₄ were applied during final land preparation. Total Urea was applied in three installments, at 15 days after transplanting (DAT), 30 DAT and 45 DAT. Twenty one days old seedlings of restorer lines were transplanted in separate strips with 20 cm x 20 cm spacing between plant to plant and row to row, respectively.

Achievement/Findings:

Mean sum of square for all characters were highly significant due to genotypes indicated wide range of variability among the restorer Iines for these traits. The cr2 g and cr2 p and the GCV and PCV were close to each other for all the traits, indicated less environmental influence and additive gene action for these traits.
