A study was conducted at the experimental farm of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Gazipur, during the period from October 2002 to May 2003 to evaluate the effect of sowing method and time on viable seed production of lettuce. There were two planting methods viz. direct sowing and transplanting, and five planting times viz. October 8, November 2, November 27, December 22 and January 16 in the experiment. Both planting method and time significantly influenced most of the characters pertaining to quality seed production. Direct sown plants showed better performance over transplanted plants in respect of seed production (367.67 kg/ha). Higher seed production was recorded in November 2 planting and second highest was recorded in October 10 planting which was statistically similar with November 27 planting and then gradually decrease in late planting. Quality seed production was recorded from first four dates of planting. The highest seed production was recorded in plants grown from direct seed sowing at November 2, which might be considered as the best combination of sowing method and time for lettuce seed production.

To explore the possibility of producing lettuce seeds and to find out the optimum sowing method and time for seed production of lettuce .

Lettuce cultivar , Green wave (originated in Japan) was used as test crop in the experiment. The experiment was laid out in split-plot design with three replications . There were two planting methods viz., Direct sowing and transplanting, and five planting times viz., October 8, November 2, November 27, December 22 and January 16 in this study. The seeds were sown in sub plots as per scheduled dates with row spacing of 40 em and 20 em apart within row in pit. Thinning was done at different stages keeping one plant per pit. Twenty five (25) days old seedlings were transplanted in the sub plot with spacing of 40 cm X 20 cm. Manures and fertilizers were applied @ cowdung (decomposed) IO ton, urea 250 Kg, TSP 150 Kg and MP 200 Kg per hectare. Fifty percent of cowdung was applied during land preparation . The remaining cowdung, entire quantity of TSP and MP were applied during pit preparation . Urea was applied as top dressing in two equal installments at 30 and 45 days after sowing while it was done for the crop raised from transplanting method at I 0 and 25 days after transplanting. Irrigation along with other intercultural operations were done as and when needed . Support was given with bamboo sticks to keep the plants erect. When 60% of the capsules turned yellow, the seed stalks were cut and sun dried . Data on days to 50% flower, days to seed maturity , plant height at seed harvest , branches per plant, capsules per plant , seeds per capsule, seed yield, I 000 seed weight and germination percentage for different planting times were recorded and statistically analyzed and the means were separated by DMRT for interpretation of results .

Planting method significantly influenced the different reproductive parameters affecting the seed yield. Days to 50% flowering ( 122.36 days) and seed maturity (148.7I days) were observed maximum in plants grown from transplanting than plant s grown from direct seed sowing ( 119.03 days and 146.15 days, respectively) . It might be due to the transplanting shock that delayed the growth and development of the plants. The highest seed yield per plant (3.35 g) was obtained from November 2 planting which was statistically different from all other plantings (Table 2). This might be due to the fact that plants from November 2 planting experienced considerable low temperature during the vegetative growth at the initial stage, as the temperature was probably optimum to fulfill the vernalization requirement of the plants . These plants eventually produced maximum vegetative growth, flower stalks, capsules and seeds per plant, which contributed to produce maximum seed yield per hectare (418.3 kg). The interaction effect of sowing method and time showed significant variation on seed yield and yield contributing characters except days to 50% flowering, days to seed maturity, seeds per capsule, 1000 seed weight and germination. Plants grown from direct seed sowing at November 2 were vigorous and produced the highest amount of seed (461.70 Kg/ha) followed by the plants of October 8 sowing (397.50 kg/ha) . The lettuce seed yield was gradually decreased on later planting on both sowing methods. However , the lowest seed yield (268.30 Kg/ha) was obtained from the plants grown at January 16 by transplanting . From the above discussion , it may be suggested that direct seed sowing at November (Var: Green wave) is more suitable for seed production of lettuce under Gazipur condition.
