Effect of Sesbania Rostrata as Relay Intercrop on Boro Rice and as Green Manure on T. Aman Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study was conducted to see the performance of Sesbania rostrata as relay intercrop in boro rice and subsequently as green manure in transplant aman rice. Results revealed that relay cropping of S. rostrata did not exert any adverse effect on the growth and yield of boro rice. Green manuring with S. rostrata at different rates maintained grain yield of transplant aman rice at a satisfactory level. Green biomass @ 15 t ha^-1, was found to be as good as application of 80 kg N/ha for modern rice cultivation. Application of green biomass of S. rostrata was found to maintain soil organic matter content and other nutrients in the soil better than the standard dose of chemical fertilizers alone.

Objectives:

To see the performance of Sesbania rostrata as a relay inter-crop in boro rice and subsequently its effect as green manure on the succeeding Transplant Aman rice for maintaining productivity of rice.

Methodology:

The experiments were laid out in a RCB design with four replications. The unit plot size was 15 m² (5m X 3m) for both the experiments. In this experiment BR14, a modern rice variety was used as test crop.(a) Sesbania aculeata (b) Sesbania rostrata B. Planting arrangement:(a) 25 cm apart between two rows of rice (25 cm X 15 cm) (b) 50 cm apart in one row interval of rice (50 cm X 15 cm) (c) 75 cm apart in two rows intervals of rice (75 cm X 15 cm) (d)100 cm apart in three rows intervals of rice (100 X 15 cm) (e) Control (No Sesbania was relayed) Sesbania seedlings of 15 days old were transplanted as relay crop in rice field at panicle initiation stage. Rice was harvested on 5 May 1995, while Sesbania plants were allowed to grow up to sixty days after transplanting when they were in corporated in the soil for the second experiment. A modern rice variety was used as test crop in this experiment. Green biomass of S. rostrata @ 15, 20. 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50 and 55 t ha^-1 were applied as nine different treatments. Besides,one control treatment containing standard dose of fertilizer was also imposed. Sesbania grown earlier in the plots as relay crop was cut at sixty days from each plot and their weights were recorded. Green manuring in situ was practised in this experiment to supply green biomass to the plots according to the treatments. Sesbania seedlings of 15 days old were transplanted as relay crop in transplanting. Intercultural operations were done as and when needed . Rice was harvested on 30 November 1994. The data on yield components were collected and analyzed statistically. Soil samples were collected twice 1.e after 20 days of green biomass incorporation and at harvest from different plots for chemical analysis to see the nutrient status of soil.

Achievement/Findings:

Sesbania spp. were relayed with boro rice to see the performance of both the crops as affected by each other. Performance of both the species of Sesbqnia Data showed that survival rate of S. rostrata was much higher than that of S. aculeata in all the treatments . However, lower densities of seedlings contributed to higher survival rate in both the species, Yield and yield contributing characters of bora rice as affected by relaying Sesbania spp. Data indicated that relay cropping of S. rostrata did not exert significant influence on most of the plant characteristics except plant height, number of total tillers,and fertile grains Yield and yield contributing characters of BR11 as affected per panicle. From the findings of the present study it might reasonably be concluded that S. rostrata could easily be fitted in the rice based cropping systems without hampering the growth and yield of the first rice crop, and the same species can effectively be used as green manure for the succeeding crop. Green biomass of Sesbania rostrata @ 15 t/ ha , could maintain the expected rice yield by replacing the standard dose of Urea-N as well as maintain soil fertility, which might also be beneficial from environmental point of view
